This is a cool little place. Quiet, not crowded. Lots of character. A couple good western restaurants and a few bars. Great views of mountains and farms. Around two hours from Dali by van.

if you've ever seen clips in movies about what a village should look like, then this is it. It's been updated, but remains authentic, with the village still full of local citizenry.

For a look at true ancient history, it is amazing to walk around this town. most of the building are 600+ years old and the history dates back over 1000 years. Definitely worth a visit. This was part of the old Tea Horse road and later part of the southern silk road.

Beautiful picturesque ancient city, everything in walking distance. Many restaurants and small (mainly tourist) shops.

We were here for Chinese New Year eve and the atmosphere was lovely, with lots of people on the streets setting off firecrackers, children playing and fireworks. I've been to many ancient towns in China, and this was one of my favourites. There are some really quaint bars, restaurants and souvenir shops, and lovely mountain views. Would recommend staying a night here, as the atmosphere in the evening is excellent. There are plenty of hotels/hostels inside the town. Entry is free.
The village is located in between Lijiang and Dali. You may wish to combine with a trip to Shibaoshan (石宝山), just 14km away.

I recommend to visit this town to whom wants to relax and escape from the city noise. We spent our christmas days in this town and it was absolutely what I call as "peaceful Christmas". Plus, people here was also friendly.

80% of the town is under construction, dusty, noisy and closed off. The pretty square is still OK on three sides and the bridge is untouched, but the rest is just one big roadworks. All will be finished by early 2020 though. It is a long and windy road to get here, too, so best wait until it's worth it. Baisha near Lijiang is nice, convenient and a much better choice until Shaxi is all fixed up.

What a marvelous small town seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Our guide Nongbu brought us here from Shuhe in Lijiang. Two highlights, besides the Shaxi Chongyu Boutique Inn, are the bridge that leads to the town and the Friday morning open market. Both are worth visiting.
The bridge was memorable by the fact we were present at the crest of the bridge when an American man proposed marriage to his Chinese gf , both who live in the San Francisco area. Thus she was able to excitedly express her joy to us who could understand English. She showed us her large engagement ring too.
The Friday open market sells all sorts of items, mostly household and farm implements. There were no souvenirs items such as T-shirts and caps. I bought some tangerines, boiled peanuts, and a bunch of band-aids. Some unusual items for sale were animal pelts, human hair, and knives.

This is one of the few remaining Tea Horse Trade Routes towns. Its lovely, less hassled than Lijiang but its a trek to get here. Its really worth it though...
There are excellent walking routes, lovely cafes but its the intimacy of the architecture and the sense of space and time. Surrounded by amazing hills and mountains - it really is magnificent
BE AWARE -when we visited they were undertaking repairs to the main drainage system and so parts of the town were hard to access. Its still worth the visit...

The weekly market along the main streets are full of interesting stalls where the local people shop. Mushrooms, cheese, breads, household items, and bees/hornets! Animals for sale down by the river. Parts of the main streets are being renovated, so walking can be tricky, especially after dark.

We are planning a visit to Shaxi in December but understand that the village is undergoing some major roadwork. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, would Shaxi still be worth a visit, or should I skip this? Thank you!

We just left this morning (end Nov) and it was really not worth it as 80% of the town is dug up. It's a long trip for little benefit.

From Dali to shaxi to lijiang, what's the best way? I'll be in Dali but want to stop in shaxi for a half day on my way to lijiang. Can I do buses between the three or is it best to hire a private driver?

Hi, buses are slower & I am not sure if there is a direct bus from Dali to Shaxi. If you take a bus, you probably have to go to Jianchuan, then get another bus Jianchuan to Shaxi.
You can ask your hotel or driver if there are already other tourists going directly to Shaxi, then you can share the car (& of course the fare) with them.
Shaxi half day is not enough, especially if you want to see the Friday farmer market.

This is a charming authentic village, not as tourist infested as Dali or Lijiang.
A beautiful main square and old temple are the highlights

need to seek advise from members :
(1) I am travelling from Dali to Lijiang then to Shangrilla by road, then fly back to Kunming.
I am having a dragging bag, shall I travel to Shaxi after Dali before Lijiang ?
or Shall I go to Lijiang first, leave the luggage at Lijiang then travel to shaxi.
(2) or shall I travel to Shangrilla from Lijiang , then come to Lijiang, shaxi . after Shaxi to Dali , Kunming
Thanks

I can only say 1 night is definitely sufficient. We in fact did it as a day trip from Lijiang that also included a visit to Shibaoshan. We had a private driver/guide, though, and that certainly gave us more flexibility. Enjoy your trip.
