This temple is called Guan Lin (關林) in Chinese. In Chinese culture, for the sake of respect, the tomb of an Emperor is called “Ling” (陵,mausoleum). then the tomb of a Saint is called “Lin” (林,forest).

There are only two great man’s tombs named “Lin” in China. One is “Kong Lin (孔林)” for Confucius (the Saint of culture and education), the other is “Guan Lin (關林)” for Guan Yu (the Saint of War).

Guan Yu played a significant role in the establishment of Liu Bei's state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD).

In Chinese folk religion, Guan Yu is referred to as "Emperor Guan" or “Saint of War”. Emperor Guan’s temples and shrines were widely established across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and even Korea, Vietnam and Japan. For example, Hsing Tian Kong (行天宮,Guan's Temple) in Taipei is one of the most worshiped temple in Taiwan.

In a final battle, Guan Yu was captured by the enemy, and was executed by capitation. His body was buried at Dangyang, Hubei Province (Dangyang Guan Mausoleum), and his head was buried here.

Recent archeological investigations suggested that the real place of the tomb of Guan Yu’s head might be at Guan Town (關庄) in the rural area of Luoyang.

However, this place is still the largest temple and memorial garden dedicated to Gaunyu.

Guan Yu was executed in 220 CE at the end of the Han dynasty. He was later lionised as a demigod. This mausoleum is billed as the place where his head was interred. The temple figures are bright and beautiful.

Had the privilege of visiting this place but have to admit it was on my to do list. I have always been fascinated by the 3 kingdoms era & this place did not disappoint. Very tranquil setting with information about Guan Yu & some of his generals and the burial site of his head. Had some interesting references to his horse & some weapons. Very Dynasty Warriors like, if you are a fan of the games :) If you aren't interested or know about the era it probably wont be that special to you but it's easy to get too & can be easily worked into a trip to the Grottoes.

Bus line 10 goes from Luoyang city center to both the grottoes & the temple so feel free to stop off there on the way or way back It will prob take you 1-2 hours to look round. You have to walk a little way down a street off the main road but as always just look for the big brown tourist signs for directions. The temple is at the end of the road (I think it's even called Guanlin road so that makes it easy!). Bus should cost 1.5 RMB. Entry price 40RMB.

If you are a fan of the romance of 3 kingdoms novel then perhaps its one of the place that you may want to visit when you are at Luoyang. But honestly the whole place is very underwhelming and you have to pay 50 yuan to just go into a normal temple. I will have given this a miss. Probably you can spend less than 1 hour in this location.

Of the top rated sites in the city, and being a short hop from Longman, this was a pleasant spot to escape the crowds of Longman or white horse temple. It's a very nice example of a Chinese temple with some information in English which many temples here lack

You can do this along with Longmen Grottos and the White Horse Temple(temple of the horse that travelled with Tripitaka/ Xuanzang), then you can finish off the night at Lijing Gate shopping street and Luoyang Pagoda tourist site.

There are many statues here and quite a colorful place. Upon entering, there's his Sabre on the left pagoda and his horse on the right. You get to visit a few temples with several of his idols/ statues, and one particular one seems like what his room would have been-with him reading on one side and sleeping on the other.

There is also a room just for praying his wife if I am not wrong. There are a few odd-looking fanciful trees that were given fanciful names related to 3Kingdoms as well.

Outside of the temple is a garden with old animal statue-relics which you might be interested in.

I went to Jingzhou before this. So it's good that I came here too. His body is buried elsewhere which didn't quite fit my itinerary so this is the best I can do.

I went with my dad. This place is easy. Under 1 hour is enough I think. You do not need a guide in either of the places I went in Luoyang but you definitely do need a driver if you want to save time. It's not as developed as Beijing or Xi'An so you cannot expect the public transport to be easy.

My driver for that day was a young chap. He is friendly and not costly. In fact, he even offered to bring us to an additional place that I did not know of, when he could have just sent us off to hotel and go back to rest.

My partner and I went to visit this temple as we wanted to pay respects. The grounds are quite large and the area is extremely peaceful. The temple has been built in the 1500s, we were told that it would only take us 10 minutes to look around but we took about 2 hours. No joke. As we train in northern style long fist, and one of the weapons we use is the Kwan Dao, my partner teaches his students the history of the weapon and the significance of general Guanlin. The temple has many little sub temples including one of the Five Tigers where you can pay respects to all five disciples who protected the emperor. You can also pay respect to General Guanlin's wife. GuanLin's head has been buried at the back of the temple, in an 8 trigram burial tomb which you can katow to and light incense. There are more modern areas that have been built inside the grounds such as a lovely pond with a small bridge and a pagoda you can sit in. There are other ancient features such as the old drum tower on one side, and the ancient bell tower on the other. You can climb the bell tower and look out over the courtyard. Everyone here is very friendly and they will advise you if you are foreign and wish to light incense or are unsure of where to go. Generally, just walk forwards. Enter the temples with your left food first.

I liked this temple as the idols are quite different than other temples in China. Quiet place, very serene.
