In the main campus of the Yunnan Normal University. There are historical remains of former National Southwestern Associated University (國立西南聯大, 1938-1946).
When the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved to inland, and united in Changsha (in Hunan Province) to form Changsha Temporary University.
As Japanese forces were gaining more territory, they bombed Changsha in 1938. Eight hundred staff faculty and students made the 1,000 mile journey walking to to Kunming, re-established the University, and changed its name to the Southwest Associated University.
During those years, subject to bombing by the Imperial Japanese Air Force and shortages of food and books, teachers and students of the Southwest Associated University. _ did their best to conduct a modern university
The faculty gathered many prominent academics, scholars, scientists and intellectuals of China. They cultivated lots of outstanding students.
One of the Math Professor, Shiing-Shen Chern, won the Wolf Prize in 1984.
Seventy-nine of the teachers become Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering in later years.。
Two students graduate from the Department of physics, Chen-Ning Franklin Yang and Tsung-dao Lee, earned the Nobel Prize in 1957. Ninety two students become Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The famous Chinese and American writer, Nelson Ikon Wu (鹿橋), is also a graduate from the Department of English. The story of his novel, Never-Ending Saga (Wei Yang Ko, 未央歌 ), is based on the scenes of the Southwestern Associated University.
During the war, 14% or over 1000 students or graduates of the University jointed the army to fight the Japanese. Lots of them were sacrificed.
So many moving and admirable stories.........
Thanks to a kind college student who indicated me the location of the remains and Museum of the Southwestern Associated University.

The campus itself is just like many other universities and college. What sets this place apart is that it was once a joint university during WWII. And there is a classroom building that survived which makes it significant.
This is not a must see, but if you have extra time in Kunming, check this out.

You can always get in a game of pick up basketball here. It's a good way to meet some young locals, keep fit, and feel less like a tourist.
But be warned, gweilo, you will always be a tourist in China.

Located out of town it is worth as visit if you are in the neighbourhood. The plazas and buildings are impressive with wisteria covered arbors and attractive artificial lakes.

First of all, I admit to bias as this location was where my parents graduated during the Anti-Japanese War (they were Peking University student refugees). Nevertheless, the Xinandlianda Museum is a modern two story memorial dedicated to that period and the Chinese respect for education as the leading professors of Beida, Tsinghua and Nankai Universities fled here when the Chinese government from Nanjing retreated to Chongqing after the Japanese also occupied Beiping (was not called "Beijing" at that time as the capital was in Nanjing). These 3 centers of learning 2500 miles from Beiping operated under the most impoverished conditions rather than accede to the Japanese occupation. All young Chinese interested in modern Chinese history and culture should visit this gleaming polished edifice. the modern computer terminals (where I found my father's graduation photo in 1939) are strategically placed throughout to access more information. The exhibits of old photos, instruments, books, manuscripts, memorabilia and biographies of the leading educators of the time and the great graduates during the period (1938-45) including 2 Nobel Laureates in Physics are meticulously handled. The park like locale of the Museum at the University has a reverential feeling with plaques, grave stones and markers. Many of the professors returned to their institutions after the war to re-establish higher education in China and later in Taiwan. The staff are a dedicated cadre of historians and students but the hours of the museum are "mysterious". We were able to get access into the locked museum kindness of our driver's patient pursuit of staff engaged in administrative meeting. Perhaps interested visitors should call for prior reservation as the curators seemed most willing to accommodate interested parties.

Yunnan Normal University has several campuses in Kunming, so please be sure which one you want to visit. The newest campus is in "University City" at Chenggong District 呈贡区, over an hour to the south of city center in a relatively new development.
The campus I'm talking about here is in the city center, spread out along both sides of Yi Er Yi Road 一二一大街, not far from Green Lake Park. It's the one featured on the map provided on Tripadvisor site.
Went there late yesterday afternoon to meet a couple friends. A convenient meeting point is the main gate, pictured above. Reading the name on the main gate is difficult, even if you know Chinese, because it is written in a decorative cursive style that values visual appeal more than legibility.
Not really sure why you'd want to go here as a tourist, but it might be worth knowing that there are lots of bookstores nearby as well as computer stores. This is usually the case anyplace there's a large collection of university students. Also lots of excellent inexpensive eateries across the road and around a bend on Yuan Xi Road 园西路, where real estate is a little cheaper.

The new campus out of town is located about 1.5 hours out of Kunming downtown. It's fully equipped with a huge gym, indoor swimming pool, dorms, complex full with shops and what are needed for students. The campus is actually like the town itself. Modern design buildings with beautiful landscapes, gardens, and big lake.
The classrooms, auditoriums are equipped with good facilities, wifi, cafe's are everywhere.
Moreover, the management team, professors, students are very friendly and helpful.
