It was cool to look at because we stayed near it and walked by everyday. The construction and road barriers made it tricky to get to as we had to walk around quite a few things to get to it. Worth checking out if in the area.

I mean, sure. If you're in the area, it can be a nice place to drop by, look at the buildings, buy a few souvenirs, walk around, and leave.

Stayed at the Hump, a foreigner friendly hostels just above the square.
Daytime, the place is so so , feels poor. Even fake.
But nighttime, once the lightnings are on, looks fabulous
I recommend sitting on the Hump terrace and enjoying the historical site

This historical site is at the center of Kunming city. Busy traffic and not easy to get closer for a better look. We made passing by twice for a better glance from the bus of the archways and photo shots from a distance across the road before proceeding our journey to the airport.

Better to visit at night as the 2 arches were beautifully lit up and shining like gold. The square was packed with people. The surrounding shops were selling same trinkets and junk food. Just beside the square is a shop with an unique name "F-House", not sure what its Chinese name was. Across the busy road were shopping complexes. Watch out for those quiet electric bikes with no headlights zooming everywhere at road juctions. Frankly the square had nothing of historic significance. Locals and travellers, besides mingling with the crowds, could probably get whatever they need here, from trinkets to souvenirs, finger food to alcoholic drinks and daily necessities.

As this is part of the shopping area, it's not too time consuming to pass by. The Yunan noodles shop overthere is good.

Europeans will be disappointed. Nothing is historic there. Another newly created "old town". A lot of shops they sell the same. Food is very bad there. it´s just another moneymaking theme park. You want to see some old buildings go to the old bird and flower market if you lucky they didn´t rip away the last few buildings. better go to Dali or Jianshui the old towns still there.

One of the attractions in Kuming. Visted the place day time and not so beautiful. Advisable to visit the at night.

Though i forgot the story behind these arches, it's still a glam you can imagine at it's glourious day.
Very impressive floor ancient map cravings which very well say it out about the ancient old charming Kunming.
p.s. No shopping though a lot of shops there except good shop for buying rose petals cookies & Chinese cake.

It is a landmark and a popular spot for visiting tourist; plenty of shopping in the immediate area. Good atmosphere and you could walk to the nearby high end shopping pedestrian street as well.

i havnt check exactly shop opening time around there but within reasonable time say 1200 to 1700 should be safe.
however, i highly recommend if you can stay some time longer, say, an after dinner walk, for the night lights which reflect a even beautiful Jinma Biji. enjoy.
