Very nice! Ended up sitting at one of the shops and having tea for a few hours, chatting, as the shopkeepers explained the different types of pu'er tea and how to drink it. We bought a few packets, and then wandered around the remaining shops. Most of them sell in bulk and/or online, but they also sell smaller doses, and people working there are happy to answer questions and tell you about their homegrown tea.

If you are tourist you are going to be ripped off if you are foreign tourist ...twice as much ;-) So don't forget negotiating and use your common sense before buying some very old pu-erh or tea from ancient trees ( gu shu ) . Lot's of marketing stories are around ( more in blog ) , but overall is the best place in Kunming where to buy tea for decent price. It is reachable by subway or by taxi from the city ( 10-20 CNY ) and many restaurants around if get hungry after drinking lots of tea. Don't get upset if they try to rip you off. It's part of the shopping on many markets in China. Stay calm and Have fun!

If you like Chinese tea, especially Pu-er Tea (from a city South of Kunming not far from the Yanmar border), this is the best place to go. One can sample many varieties of Pu'er tea including the Glutinous rice Pu'er tea (Lo-Mi) which I normally stock for myself for drinking. Beside that there are other varieties such as "Tieh Kuan Inn" (Golden goddess of mercy) Oolong tea and others not the products of Yunan. They even sell "Cher Sar" (A special clay port very hardened after fired in kiln) pots (which are very costly, some cost as much as 500 Remmingbi each, I have owned more than a dozen at home here) imported from a small town called "Yee Shing" near Nanking. Most tea connoisseurs would use this kind of pots for brewing Chinese tea.
Maybe half a day is recommended to go through all the stores selling tea and appliances.

The tea market in Kunming is a wonderful place. An entire compound is devoted to tea shops-- selling tea as well as tea accessories. We had a wonderful time tasting tea with a wholesaler, using our limited knowledge of Mandarin, a lot of gesturing, and the help of our English/Chinese speaking guide. Also enjoyed the many tea accessory shops with tea canisters, tea pots, tea cups and other tea accessories. Enjoy this lovely market!

If you don't know much about tea or speak at least a little Chinese, this probably isn't the place for you unless you bring a Chinese friend.

Otherwise excellent range of teas (mostly black and pu'er although I'm sure there were others available in more general stalls). I didn't find many stores that sold basic and affordable (for a student anyway) tea utensils but settled on one and it was fine. There were plenty of beautiful, pricier sets however! There may have been some in another section, the place is sprawling and being a single foreigner it felt a bit awkward wandering around even though I know a lot about Chinese tea. Be brave and you might find more.

Regardless, if you want to try tea, just write up a list of the type of teas you want to try translated into Chinese and pick a store! Strike up a convo with someone, they're bound to be friendly.

Really tricky to find based on location given on Trip advisor! I wandered for two hours!! Google "Kunming Wholesale Tea market" and find the correct address then give it to a cabbie. It'll be like 10 kuai and worth it.

If you have any interest in tea then this is the place to go! I went with a local and he took us to his favorite shop. We spent 3-4 hours there drinking probably 8-10 different varieties of tea. It was quite the education. Really an enjoyable afternoon.

If you are interested in Yunnan tea, especially Pu'er, this is the place to come to sample and to buy. A huge number of establishments are on both sides of the street. Thes are wholesalers, but most will accommodate retail customers as well.

They will brew some tea for you to try and if you like it, you can buy some at good prices. As usual, you need to know how to bargain. It's a low pressure environment.

Also found some stores that sell tea ware 茶具 plus tea trays and such. The vendors are knowledgeable and most like to talk about tea matters. I spent a pleasant morning tasting interesting teas. Wound up buying some.

It's not far from the center of Kunming and you can get there by public bus (plus a short walk) or by taxi.
