Nice place to visit on a December morning - with kids. Staff very polite and smiling to young kids, under 5. Highly recommend!

City’s highlight and landmark. Located right next to the old town. Definitely worth a visit, but expect crowds in the summer months.

The most of the stuffed animals are disgusting. The castle and the whole city seems to be in love with stuffed animals. The rest of the exhibition mostly consists of photographs and drawings of Vyborg from different years.

Vyborg Castle, I got those expectations and feelings that I wanted. First, I was lucky with the weather, although it was winter, but the sun came out and everything brightened up. Secondly, I was there on Monday, and the entrance to the castle tower itself was closed, as it is a day off on Mondays. But the entrance to the castle grounds is completely accessible. I practically walked alone in a small area. An ancient, stunning, massive, brutal castle. I really liked everything, of course most of all, that I am alone, and there are no crowds of tourists in the background of the photographs. Will go back there in the summer with friends to see it inside too.

First about one thing which puzzles foreigners about the tower - there are people seen up there but entrance is prohibited. The explanation is very simple and very Russian. It's windy in Vyborg and rules are that whenever wind's speed is higher than a norm they halt admittance to St Olav. So, obviously, for visitors it may be a lottery, especially for non-Russian speakers since someone from the museum staff (usually an old lady) would quite unexpectedly roar out loud to a cashier - Hey, Katya (or Masha, or Tanya), start selling! (Naturally, she does it in her native tongue.) So agitated visitors would rush for the tickets - except for aliens who don't understand a damn. Bear in mind!
The tower is newly renovated but the climb is not for those experiencing acrophobia. Spell-binding views from its top more than recompenses your efforts and shivers though. They let you go up in groups of not more than 25 people, each thirty minutes.
The museum is really obsolete, like half a cetury ago. Only the ground floor tells you about the castle's history. Other halls up are dedicated to WWII and - strange as it may seem - to the region's flora and fauna. Not worth visiting at all. Explanations in English are rare.
So I'd recommend to try your luck with the tower and avoid their museum.

I visited the Vybirg castle on a cold January morning. I disagree with the previous contributors that the visit is not worth it. I enjoyed it immensely. It is a terrific castle. I was basically alone during the visit. I.e. there was practically no one else during the climb to Olaf tower and the ehibit visit.Don't forget about the castle cat - Sir Filimon. It has even an Instagram page. I started following it after the visit.

Vyborg Castle is a fortress located on the little island in the town called Vyborg, located in the North of Russian Federation close to the Finland border. It was built at the end of 13th Century and it was very important in the Russian-Sweden wars in the Middle Ages.
Now, it is a building, which you can visit. It was very nice, but pitifully (almost) all rooms you can visit is for children. You can wear with traditional clothes, you can catch swords, hamlets, etc, and you can feel as you are being tortured. Also, you can visit a little serious museum. It is ok, but I would like to learn more about the history of the castle and the region.

Although this castle might appear to be the most interesting thing in Vyborg, that is not the case. It is uninteresting, even for people who are history-oriented as my family is. Additionally, there is little to no signage in English, so the museum is rather difficult. A basic ticket purchased at the ticket booth only allows entrance to the castle museum. This museum entrance ticket is pricey at over $10 per perrson. Each other part of the castle - and there are many - requires a separate entrance ticket. We did not find it engaging enough to continue to pay for the experience beyond the initial ticket.

Quite interesting fortress build by a Swedish king in 1100 century in the border against Russian tzar empire. Restauration ongoing. The cafe was a joke serving just coffee, tea and water.

The castle was my main reason to visit Vyborg on a day trip from St. Petersburg.
The castle looks amazing from the outside, but the experience inside was very disappointing.
I had to pay a steep 700 R (same price as for the Eremitage) and it turned out that the ticket was only for the small museum (4 rooms, of which only one had some english explanations).
Climbing to the top of the tower was not included and tickets were not available, although i saw people on top of the tower. Staff could not explain me how to access the tower due to lack of english language skills.
