These islands and their communities are remarkable and we visited en route to the much preferable Taquile island an hour and a half further into the lake.
The Uros experience is tawdry: a short explanation about how the islands are made leads quickly to being shown the single room dwelling of the local character who had talked to you and equally quickly to a strong sales pitch for materials which we did not want/need.
A ride on the ‘traditional’ boat costs 15S and drops you at another island boasting a cafe, more market and a loo.
The area around the islands- the marvelous reed beds is filthy and riddled with plastic detritus. Equally the pollution of the toilets and the numerous animals on the islands is concerning.

This was quite the experience we visited a family who still live on the islands, they should us their way of life from how they make the reeds into a structure to live on, how they prepare food and what they eat etc. We also had a ride on the boats around the island. My husband was suffering from altitude sickness and they gave him a natural remedy to help ease it, which he said worked. There was a bit of pressure to buy some handmade goods from the family at the end of the trip but overall was great to actually feel like you were experiencing something traditional.

A must - go when you visit Peru. Originally we booked an overnight on one of the islands, but due to weather we decided to switch to a hotel in Puno. After breakfast we took a half-day trip to the islands. It fakes about 40 minutes in a boat to get to one of the islands. Walking feels a bit funny. People are very nice, after all, they do want to sell you some souvenirs. You will get "How to build a floating island" 101 course, learn few local customs and listen to couple legends about Pachamama and Pachapapa. Additional ride in a traditional (well, i'd say almost traditional :-) ) boat to another island will cost you a few dollars. Make sure you have a jacket.

Really interesting to see how they construct these islands that float, how they live in tiny huts on the island and how they sustain and support themselves from the land.

Sadly the waters of Lake Titicaca are so polluted with effluent the boat trip across to the Uros Islands was nauseating.
Family on island gave a welcoming and informative talk about island life.

As a part of a longer tour we visited these amazing floating reed bank villages. Not all are the same, but very similar- a good cultural education. Walking on island was like walking on a slow trampoline. If in Puno-this is a must see, and visit.

We kayaked to them from the mainland, which was a nice way to arrive. The locals control the tourists, deciding which local family you are going to visit. I liked that. Our guide explained how they arrived there and how they build their islands. They show you their houses. There is pressure to buy something in cash. You can get a short trip on their banana boats for an extra S/.20 pp

The excursion to Lake Titicaca with Terra Quechua Peru exceeded all our expectations. The organisation was perfect and the guide extremely informative and friendly. Before arriving in Peru, I had always had Lake Titicaca in mind as a romance. Arriving on the shore, the lake presented itself as a deep blue ocean and I was not disappointed. With the Andes framing the lake in the distance, it is often called the highest navigable lake in the world and the air, rarefied but fresh, confirms this.
The Uros Islands are a unique wonder, and Taquile Island offered an enriching cultural experience. The hike on Taquile was a little challenging, but the views from the top of the lake were spectacular. Lunch was delicious and typical of the region

Prepare to have pushy sales talk to buy handmade souvenirs.
We were very excited to visit the uros floating islands after seeing it online. Once we reached, the “head” of the tribe would introduce his island , how the island is built and the dynamics of lake titicaca.
After that , we were brought into a hut. We thought we will get a chance to look around and explores the home of the tribe. However, to our surprise, sales talk start. The lady started to sells different kind of handmade products.
At this point, I am fully aware that tourism is part of their income and the fact that due it is all handmade, the products are quite expensive. what I was surprised was how pushy the lady have become to buy their products. we spend a good 30 mins on this sales talk.
After this sales talk, nothing have been shared about their houses, lifestyle etc then , we have to pay 20 soles for the traditional boat.( ok this is optional in case you do not wish to take)
At the end of the visit, we were wondering if the tribe that we visited really stay in the island , or maybe it is just another “job” for the tribes to be in the island during visiting time.
Overall not an authentic or sincere exchange we felt.

We did a day visit to the Uros floating islands. Fascinating to see how these islands are constructed and how the families live. Then we did a homestay at Amantani, 2nd largest island on Lake Titicaca. Another interesting visit our host family were friendly, accommodating and the food was plenty and lovely. The next day we had lunch on Tequile, 3rd largest island on Lake Titicaca. The Islands are all unique and worth a visit. We went with Llama Path, our guide Freddie was great. Told us lots about the history of the area and he made sure we were OK all the time.

We have a short time to visit the Puno area - can you see these islands from the shore at all?

Grazie a tutti

Si ha una strana sensazione camminando sui vari strati di giunchi, ma non si “ondeggia”, se è questa la domanda.
Però essendo isole si raggiungono ovviamente in barca, anche se le acque sono solitamente poco mosse.

Hi,
We are planning a trip to Peru for this August and would like to visit the Uros Islands in Titicaca.
We arrive at Puno at 15:00-16:00pm with Cruz del Sur and the next morning 08:00am we have to leave Puno for Cusco. So, we have only one afternoon and the night to Puno.
Do you think that it is possible to have a tour at Uros Islands with only few hours free in the afternoon ? Do you know any tour office that does afternoon tours?
Thanks in advance,
Alfonso

Did you the tour boat to get to the islands/homes or did you take a local boat?
Ditulis pada 6 September 2018
Tour boat organized by hotel that goes to Uros then after the tour of floating islands it goes to Taquile island. Careful at the floating islands as it is more of a tourist trap but Taquile is exceptional and worth the trip

Hola Guillermo.

Hello TA friends. Would you guys recommend a day trip or an overnight stay? I see reviews on how the island has become a tourist spot. I was hoping to have a cultural experience but not sure is that will be the case if it seems commercialized.
Thank you

I didn't find it 'touristy'.
In fact I liked to contribute to the community.
I had a 2.5 hour tour, which was enough for me, but it would be nicer to stay on the island than stay in Puno town.
I spoke to one couple who thoroughly enjoyed their family stay.

we are arriving in Puno from Cusco by Bus around 3:30 or so.
and would like to spend the night on one of the islands.
does anyone know about the transportation options.
Ditulis pada 4 April 2018
The boats are mostly leaving in the morning, I guess spending a night in Puno instead is the option.
Ditulis pada 15 April 2018
How early in the morning do the floating island tours become available?
I am wanting to see if we will have time to see the islands and return in time to catch the 10am Bolivia Hop bus to Cusco.
Ditulis pada 28 September 2017
You had to be at the jetty by about 7am.
Very touristy so if you don't have time you are not missing very uch
