Came here expecting to see typical shotengai in Japan but this place is for local shops, going about their daily affairs.
If you are looking Hakata traditional arts and crafts, go the Hakata Kawabata Shopping Arcade at the old town Hakata. This place is connected to Canal City Mall via overhead bridge.

Great old fashioned shopping area. Some of the major department stores have left the area but there are many street vendors and excellent restaurants. Try Strawberry Fields Restaurant. Also, if you want to try Pachinko this this the area for you.

Nowadays many shopping streets in Japan are not active, as consumers tend to buy at big shopping malls. But this shopping street in Nishijin is still spirited and attracts many people.

The center point is the Nishijin subway station and from there, it fans out.
There is an institution of higher learning, about south east of the subway station and a little ahead is where the fort were built to resist the Mongol invasion. North of the subway station, is where the shopping district lies. It is linear in construction and it is also filled with slot machines.
The place is nice and neat and at some part, vendors placed their cart in the middle of the road, which implies that it is a pedestrian street. Prices are a tad cheaper, here and it has sufficient variety.
Worth a visit to see a local area.

Went there because some reviewers commented about the 'local feel' and it did give us that impression. Things were not tourist oriented and the price of things were cheaper than other areas. We scored some bargains which were 20-30 per cent lower than other places.

This shopping street is located between subway Nishijin and Fujisaki station, in Sawara-ku (ward). The street was founded on the part of Karatsu-kaido road (唐津海道) since Edo period
You can walk the whole street within an hour or so. An interesting shopping district that is essential of old style Japanese shopping, with abundance of local produce such as fresh vegetables, seafood, bakeries, street food and more. There are a variety of restaurants whipping up local ramen and udon noodles, or even US style cafes (pizza & steak), with the many smells of food cooking are everywhere..
Not exactly “hype” that you are looking for but more specifically local shopping where you can mix with the locals as they do their daily shopping. Here you will see stalls forming a row in the center of the street. They are nicknamed “wheeled cart troop”. The carts sell fresh vegetables, sea foods and flowers. They are all fresh and reasonably priced. The stalls attract many people from the neighboring areas and probably visitors like us.!.
The street of Nishijin is always vibrant and lively with the brisk voices of these sellers. Do also explore the many small alleys shooting off the main arcade/road. Take your time and wander down the side lanes to explore the various cafes and eateries... It is really an alternative tourist visit , do try yourself..

It was a good place to walk around and while the time away. Loads of small cafes and probably more lively in the night than in the day.

Many shops but I am attracted by the Yen100 shops and the food outlets, where there are many around.
It was cold when we were there in winter but some parts are enclosed and that was comfortable !
