Visited on March 2nd and perhaps due to the colder winter the blossoms were not in full swing. There was still plenty to enjoy and the gardens themselves were a delight to walk through. There is a discount is you stay in one of the local guesthouses for for 100yen admission it would be an absolute shame to miss out on this. Bring a lunch with you and picnic in the scenery.

Very large and beautiful plum garden. They have a large variety so some bloom early Feb, some bloom late Feb. You can take the bus from the kinomiya train station or you can walk 10+mins. Actually had more prettier pics but all above 5mb. In view it's February, the sun sets quite early so come earlier

I went there a bit late when the sun started to disappear behind the mountain, so am not sure as to how crowded it gets during the day, but when I went, it was ideal as there were only very few people in the gardens.

The views are nice and the gardens are nice to stroll through and see the beautiful trees. Well worth the visit.

Very beautiful garden with Ume trees on the hill near Atami! We visited it during Ume Matsuri and had a relaxing stroll uphill taking pictures of exquisite white, rosy and purple-colored Ume flowers. There was also a foot bath where you can rest admiring views over the garden. You can take a bus number 11 from Atami JR station or a local train to Kinomiya station (3 minutes ride) + 10 min walk up to the Atami Baien. Besides, riding the bus number 11 (IC cards accepted) back to the Atami Station, you can get off at Ginza station to admire early-blooming sakura trees along a small canal and then have a stroll on the Atami beach!

Atami Baien, or Plum Garden is one of the best, if not best, in Japan. It is well-known for its early blooming trees but has both mid and late bloomers so the blossoms can be enjoyed over a long period. My wife and I visited during the Ume Festival (Plum Festival), although the stalls in the gardens were not quite open at the time of our visit. It was hard to believe it was early February with the various shades of blossoms and leaves. Within the grounds there is a man-made waterfall that you can walk behind and view the garden and a wooden bridge through the water., There is also the Sawada Seiko Memorial Museum, Korean Garden and Nakayama Shinpei Memorial Hall. Sawada was a well-known sculptor and painter from the Atami area and Nakayama was a songwriter. Entrance fee to the park is 300 yen but if you are a resident of Atami or staying at one of the hotels/ryokans, then it is just 100 yen. If you plan on visiting the Museum of Art (very worthwhile), keep your ticket stub since this will give you a 300 yen discount on the entrance fee.

Atami Baien was opened in 1886, and remains one of the most popular spots in Atami. There are 59 species of plum grown in the garden, with a total of 472 trees. Every year the plum would blossom starting from late November to early December, and a festival would be organized during the blossom period.

This year the festival started in 5 January, and would last until 3 March. As the different varieties bloom in different timing, throughout the period one would still see flowers, either in early, middle, or late blooming time, and enjoy the great experience.

During this peak season the garden also opened a parking facility nearby, so if you are driving you don't need to worry where to park. The parking fee is 600 yen. Entrance fee for the garden is 300 yen per person but it is important to note that the garden would close by 16:00.

Even though not every tree is in full blossom, we had seen quite a lot of different species, with several different shades of pink, as well as white and yellow. It was well worth coming here and I could imagine how beautiful it would be when most of the trees were blossoming.

There are some stalls and souvenir shops opened during the time, and there also also cultural events organized by the city government. You can easily spend a few hours here on the many scenic places in the garden too. A must-see if you are in Atami and during the plum season.

We were there in the middle of the plum blossom season. This park was quite huge! There was a small waterfall, museum and Korean garden! I would love to come back in the fall as it would be full of maples apparently. You get discounts ticket if you stay the night in Atami, just show the staff your reservations.
梅の花が満開のシーズンに来ました!思ってたより園内が広くてびっくりしました。小さな美術館があったり、小さな滝、韓国式のお庭もありました。次は紅葉の時期に来たいなと思っております。

We had visited this garden twice - 23 Feb 2018 and also last year around the same time as we liked it very much especially the variety of plum flowers varying from white, yellow, pink and bright pink/red.
It has the best layout and variety.
If you like to take photos of birds, this is also the place for photo opportunities.
Performers ( circus type) are also there to earn some extra pocket money.
Food is limited inside the garden unless you do not mind eating Japanese street food. Some are of low quality so watch the que by locals.
Restaurants around Kinomiya station are limited and they all closed by 2 pm for lunch ( last order before then) so you either bring your own lunch ( bento boxes) or have lunch elsewhere.
The best way to get there is to buy a day return train ticket as there is no guard at the Kinomiya station to help you if you need help especially if you dont read and understand Japanese like us.
Since its very crowded @ the plum garden ( plenty of buses with local Japanese tour groups) and it closes at 4.00 pm, its best to know how to get back to where you want to go with a train or bus timetable in hand as the trains are no frequent.
Que for public buses are very long especially in the afternoon and nearer closing time and you may not get onto the bus.
There is a slop with an incline from Kinomiya station to the Atami Plum gardens so if you are not healthy and fit walking up a slightly steep slope, it best to consider carefully your best access option and logistics e.g. bus or taxi from Atami or by other means.
Good place to visit if you into photography, flowers and in the Izu area.

Went in February when the flowers were all out (but not in full bloom perhaps). Beautiful gardens with waterfalls, trees, bridges, a Korean garden - the scenery is very peaceful. A bit of a trek to walk to from Atami station, but certainly doable.

Odawara plum garden is much more impressive if you're looking to just see plums, but this garden has so much more than plums. It has several themed gardens and a museum nestled within its grounds, even a hot foot bath to rest your weary feet. It's not that big, perhaps a 30 minute stroll or an hour at most, but the garden is set with a slight incline, creating a cascading sea of different coloured flowers if the season is right.
