Must-see live museum
Mar 2020
This lovely historical live museum is a wonderful way to commemorate the region's agricultural and cultural history. Everything is well-maintained, with thorough explanations of how each item was used. We enjoyed watching the live exhibits (actors demonstrating how, for example, food was prepared); all of the center's staff were passionate about a commitment to detail. I was surprised that there weren't more people here, given how lovely everything was.

Mini Vacation

Found this hidden gem after using 'google' for historic places. Was very impressed with the buildings that were open. We were able to take our time with the help of a complementary wheelchair. Relatives living in the area have never been here and were encouraged to visit. One drawback, we collect shot glasses + magnets with the attraction name + the small gift shop didn't carry any.

Nice folks, lots to see

We went for Maple weekend. The food was plentiful and the servers on top of things and friendly. What we did see for exhibits was pretty cool but there were a number of them that you could not go inside to see. I did like that they did have a ride from the main building to the exhibits at the other end of the property. Maybe it would be better to go on a warmer day.

Small but well worth it. A hidden gem

I was shocked to find out few people in the area have actually visited this wonderful place. The docents are excellent and the buildings varied and representative of an upstate village of the era 19th century. I attended the Highland Games here and spent quite a bit of time viewing the buildings instead of all my time at the games. Please... visit the gem... and do what I did; join as a member. Places like this are unique and need to be supported.

Overall a good place for people interested in (local) history

I have taken my children here in the past and have also taken teacher groups for in-service teaching. The staff are generally very nice and helpful and the grounds are quite impressive for the really limited budget they operate with. There is the main building with permanent exhibits about the Town of Amherst from the earliest land development with Joseph Ellicott up through the "suburbanization" of the area - they do a good job using really interesting artifacts! Then there are about 11 other buildings, including 2 churches, 2 schoolhouses and a variety of private residences that have been moved from their original locations and are scattered around the vast grounds - easy to get to all of them with a paved path. My most recent venture was to attend the special event Scottish Festival - I have to say, the food was just ok (Banchetti's "Scotch egg" was not authentic and the fish and chips was a koi fish! The music was awesome and the vendors products interesting - weather did not cooperate which did not help! It is a great place and I hope it can manage to keep going - would be a shame to lose a "hidden gem: like this. The main problem is that it is not very accessible and many local people do not even know of its existence!

Scottish Festival

We attended the Scottish Festival in August. Had a very nice time. It was well organized and efficiently laid out on the grounds. The museum was also open for browsing. Always enjoy myself there.

A piece of my family's history
Agt 2016 • Keluarga
We went here because I wanted to see my Great Grandmother's home which is the home my Grandfather grew up in - the Lavocat House. My family donated the house decades ago to the then Amherst Museum. I was pleased to see that the home is in decent condition once again. I wasn't pleased that my family and I had to pay admission to see a home my family donated. The visit was enjoyable overall as the exhibits on the inside were quite informative.

Halloween Treat - Victorian Séance Series
Sep 2016 • Teman
This is the second consecutive year we've traveled to Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village to experience the Victorian Séance Series. On various evenings throughtout the Autumn, the Heritage Village hosts talks by Mr. Joel Dombrowski of Buffalo History Tours. Mr. Dombrowski begins the program with an engaging talk about the history of Spiritualism, Victorian mourning customs and several other topics relevant to death, religious beliefs and burial customs in the Victorian era (1837 – 1901). At the conclusion of Mr. Dombrowski's lecture, guests are invited to participate in a Victorian séance led by one of several "mediums." Those who do not wish to participate in the actual séance are welcome to sit outside the circle and simply observe. Unlike last year, guests this year could purchase "Crystal Ball" tickets which entitled them to experience the séance in one of the historic building's located on the Village grounds. Those holding the slightly less expensive "Trumpet Horn" tickets remained in the lecture hall for their séance experience. Being total skeptics, we approached the séance experience both years with a healthy dose of cynicism. Although a couple of events both years gave us slight pause, there was nothing either year that made believers out of anyone in our group. That being said, we went expecting nothing extraordinary to occur. We attended for the novelty and fun of the experience. If you are looking for an off-beat, Halloween season event, I definitely recommend the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village Victorian Séance Series. Chances are, you'll learn some interesting things during the lecture and, whereas you may not commune with the spirits of the dearly departed during the séance itself, you'll have bragging rights over your friends and aquaintances who've never experienced this ritual from our more superstitious past. Note: Those who consider themselves faint of heart should know this is not a "haunted house" type experience. Even the séance itself is conducted with enough ambient lighting to see the room and everything in it quite clearly. No "spooks" or "ghouls" sneak up on unsuspecting guests.

An Erie County Gem!!!!

I visited this museum/village for the first time for the SCOTTISH FESTIVAL. The festival was great!!! The buildings were open and I went into many of them. They are well kept up, have good informational signs and at least one of them had a docent who was very good I think the admission price of $15.00 for adults is too high. Seniors do get a discount and kids under twelve are free which is helpful. The inside part of the museum is very interesting, also.
