Pammukale is a UNESCO listed site in two parts. First, the travertines, the calcite pools and terraces and slopes falling down large expanses of the face of the long escarpment behind the new town; and, behind them, the ancient city of Hieropolis and, behind it, its necropolis on, and falling down, the hills.
You can enter from the bottom of the travertines and walk up through the site(s), or come in at the top and come down through the Hieropolis part of the site, into the travertines and out.
You cannot wear shoes on the travertines, so use a day pack to carry good walking shoes, if you want to walk from top to bottom or vice versa, whether you are going to swim or not.
The travertines alone is a very large area and very beautiful. Guards try to stop tourists tramping on the flows of sparkling crystal and preservation area pools and keep them on the paths. However, it is a losing battle.
The sheer number of visitors is amazing. Most come in swimming costumes and swim in specially created pools which are beside the pathways and pose for photos. Relatively few go to Hieropolis.
So, to enjoy the day, visit the travertines first thing in the morning. You will have them pretty much to yourself. Lots of photos and a swim if you like in the warm spring water. Then, as the travertine crowd starts to build, move, via a cup of coffee, to Hieropolis, the necropolis and, last, its museum. Do not miss the amphitheatre. Beware, in summer it is a very hot and very large site to walk in. Take plenty of water.

Pamukkale (Cotton Castle in Turkish) is a natural site with hot springs forming travertine terraces. It is very unusual and large. Wear your swim suit or just pull up your pant legs and enjoy the water. The ancient city of Hierapolis was here and there are lots of wonderful ruins to explore. Make time to enjoy both the springs and the ruins. You will be glad you did! Be sure to take sun screen, a hat and water with you!

Pammukale is underrated. Hieropolis is not a minor roman site. It is far better than Pergamon, and I enjoyed it much more than Efesis. Fewer visitors are in the ancient city. They stay on the white areas. Best amphetheatre I've seen. Necropolis was outstanding. Walk anywhere, go anywhere.
