Batik is very much part of Balinese art and culture. I did this class with Ketut and learned the art's intricacies. It was intimidating at first but you relax immediately as others have fun in learning this wonderful art form.

We spent a morning with Ketut Sujana in an airy workshop where he does his own exquisite Batik artworks. He is a very good teacher, patient and helpful. He showed each of us individually the necessary techniques, and how not to burn ourselves with the hot wax. The price was reasonable and we both we so impressed with his art in Batik that we had to buy some to take home. But there was no pressure at all to buy. I totally recommend the experience.

I have done this class with Ketut 4 times over the last four years and brought groups of up to eight adult students with me. It is always one of the highlights of our annual Bali trip. I highly recommend you try it even if you don't think you can do art. Ketut is a very warm and talented teacher.

The word batik is Javanese in origin and the art of batik is most highly developed in the island of Java island ( Indonesia). In Bali there are different kinds of batiks from individual piece to the mass produced...
I love Batik and I specially love the bold colours in Ketut creations.. Always wanted to try to learn how to do it...and finally I had the time...and it is so much fun.
I am not much of a drawer so I asked the teacher if he could help me to draw a butterfly. Then had to go over the lines with hot wax ( bit tricky for the first time)...then choose the colours and colour between the lines( can be messy).
It was so relaxing just colouring in...like meditation...
After the cloth dried, it had to be dipped in hot water to get the wax off and the dipped in some solution to seal the colours in... and the end result is my own beautiful batik piece. I really enjoyed the whole process and although I worried at the beginning I will mess the colours up, but Ketut patiently showed me how to fix up mistakes and my batik butterfly turned out beautiful. Now I am hooked and will be definitely back to create some more batiks next time.
They also sell beautiful, big pieces of colourful batik onsite. ( take many days to make that strong colours). Prices for the workshop start from 400 000 IDR ( which is about $ 40 AUD) depends how big piece and how much paint it needs...perfect for beginners.

We did a Batik workshop from bali artist Ketut Sujana. Batik is batik is an ancient Balinese art form. Ketut is a very patient teacher and explains the entire process very well. The studio is located in Lungsiakan on the main road just outside Ubud, Bali's cultural and artistic center in an authentic Balinese house. I would recommend this workshop to anyone who wants to practice some traditional Balinese art / painting.
