We walked to the site from the cruise port, which took approximately ten minutes. The site is ancient remnants from the bygone era, enjoyed our visit here. Plenty of shops, restaurants in the vicinity.

Split[!] into five areas, 6 if you inlude the cellars. You can buy tickets for one area up to all 5, the cellars are separate. We chose the ticket covering all five for 15euros each. It was pretty good value and the highlights were the cathedral and bell tower, although I struggled with the latter due to my metal hip and narrowness of stairs.

Visiting on an NCL cruise, we hired a local guide on the spot to take us around the palace. The basement of the palace is the same floor plan as the upstairs would have been, so it is easy to imagine what it was like. The complex is huge. Especially enjoyed learning about Diocletian, his pagan temple of worship to Jupiter - later converted to the Cathedral of St. Dominus which is still in use. The tour was about two hours long, leaving us with time to find cappuccinos and gelato. Our guide was Joseph. Excellent guide.

An extraordinary place where you will certainly admire something from the sunset glory of the Roman Empire. From the reminiscences of the forum similar to the one in Rome, continuing with the sphinx that guards the temple as a testimony of the incursions of the Roman Empire in Egypt and ending with the basilica and the baptistery, you will feel the original air of a very special place. And one more thing: this excursion made me aware of how important our Christian religion is. You will see how Diocletian, the famous persecutor of Christians, ended up at the bottom of the sea after being thrown from his mausoleum, which in the meantime had become the Christian church as it is today, and his place was taken by Saint Domnius (killed by Diocletian many years ago) brought by Christians to the building that was originally a mausoleum. And the temple next to the building was transformed into a baptistery. All these aspects reveal the spectacularity of the thread of history!.

As a local, I must say that visiting Diocletian's palace is a unique experience. You can see how locals live within a historical site, experience how tourism changes such a place to become a maze of tourist locations such as bars and restaurants, including many apartments, making it a place of Roman ex-glory turned into a fallout-ish presentation of what happens if you don't make a Unesco site an exclusive attraction. While it can be crowded due to its narrow streets and a huge number of interesting sites to experience per square meter, it is definitely something you need to experience to understand the Croatian culture.

Incredible historical monument. Walking in the basements of ancient Roman remains we felt a part of this important part of history. We also visited Cathedral of Saint Domnius, regarded as the oldest Catholic Cathedral that remains in use. One piece of advice I would give is regarding the men who are dressed as gladiators and take pictures with tourists. They don’t state their price but expect 5 euros for this service (we saw an uncomfortable situation with tourists refusing to pay).

Visited all 5 sites - tower, cathedral, crypt, treasury and baptistry. View from tower worth the climb. Obviously can be busy during peak hours but can visit all 5 sites in any order hence avoiding crowds for most of experiences

Hi, A guide is a good idea as so many places within Diocletians that you could easily bypass.
A great place full of history.

Will be in Split on 21 October. Wanting to walk from port to Diocletian's Palace and then to Firule Beach. Could you tell me the distances
Ditulis pada 20 Januari 2020
Hi Wanderer4,
The main port is literally halfway between Diocletian Palace ( therefore Turn left exiting the port) & Firule Beach ( turn right ).
The overall distance between Diocletians & Firule Beach is 2 K
about 25 minutes walk.
From Diocletians for instance take Obala Lazareta onto Obala Kneza Domagoja onto Katalinicev Prilaz & you are at the point where Bacvice park & Beach is ... you just follow the coastline to Firule Beach.
Easy rule ... heading out of Diocletians ... keep the water on your right.
Enjoy.

No fee except for the church and baptistry. It's really a mini town with lots of shopping stalls set in ancient buildings.

I know we paid for tickets to see the basement of the palace, that’s the ancient part. But I don’t recall how much it was. You can go through the middle section of the basement to the other side for free, but you won’t see and feel much as there are vendors and artists selling products in that section. You can see the upper level which is at the same level as the old town for free as well.

How far to walk from the hotel cornaro to the Diocletian castle

It is very close, only 2 minutes. A useful website that you can use for checking how far it is, is google maps.
