When on Christmas Island you can’t help but visit the National Park. There are plenty of places to visit and walk and although most of the park is forest the beaches are the prime reason to visit.

Incredible experience of wildlife and totally unique natural environment, with an intriguing social issue as well. Outstanding birdlife, amazing scenery, great snorkelling. Tourist infrastructure is a bit basic but thats kinda part of the charm. Stayed at The Sunset - very comfortable, well located, brilliant sunset views.

Christmas Island has been described as Australia's Galapagos Islands due to its unique flora and fauna. You won't be disappointed it is a nature lovers heaven.

We were surprised at how rough the rocky surface is and found that good active footwear is essential (can be Nike's etc - does not need to be professional trekking boots). We also found that holding on when traversing rocky paths essential as falling or scraping on the rocks likely to lead to serious cuts and abrasions. That said don't be put off as the ocean and rainforest scenery is breathtaking.

There are numerous hidden beaches to escape and explore. However they are not you Bondi Beach equivalents. Sand is in short supply and there are lot's of rocky outcrops to get over to find a reasonable swimming hole. But hey this is the fun of exploring new places. The 'Grotto' is one of the exceptions. It is not really a beach but as secluded watering hole it is hard to beat. It is also relatively accessible.

The majority of the population are Malay-Chinese and they operate the supermarkets and restaurants. Naturally there is a heavy Asian influence so don't expect to be wine and dine Australian style. Food and groceries are expensive due to high freight cost so fresh provisions are usually in short supply. Best advice is get in early when the planes land before it all runs out otherwise be prepared for a high carbohydrate diet. A big plus for smokers and drinkers is that alcohol and tobacco are tax free so your savings will probably offset your higher food cost so you won't really notice any change in cost.

Diving and fishing are second to none here as the island is surrounded by coral reefs. There is a limited amount of commercial fishing so if you don't want to catch your own you can buy it but with limited supplies you need to be quick.

What also surprised us was the high level of community facilities. There are plenty of picnic tables, play equipment and parks. If you have children you should be able to keep them busy swimming, playing and eating outdoors.

We stayed here 2 weeks but 1 week should be enough for most people. It is a big island with no public transport so a car is essential if you want to get around.

Christmas Island is a fantastic place to visit. Its great for diving, snorkling, and exploring. Accomodation on the island is basic but nice. Try to get something in the settlement down the front with ocean views. I teccomend the Cabin or the Retreat for self contained, or Sunsets Hotel. They have a lovely pool. Do yourself a favour and takea break on Christmas Island

I wish TripAdvisor would allow to rate a destination, not just venues/activities.

This about the entire Christmas island experience.

First issue is only Virgin fly's there, rally need Qantas to fly to get decent flight, also the flight times with Virgin are not great,

Upon arrival, all passengers on the flight are herded into a room until all off the flight are there, given a briefing by the police and then collect bags, the system works, but bot great.

Customs/immigration quite easy.

Hire car pick up quite easy, very informal the cars are old (ours had 225,000k on the clock, but it got us there. The drive into town is interesting as for the first timers there road directions are not well marked, particularly the turn to the city center, yes the sign says no right turn, but to the recently arrived the alternative looks like driving to an operational port, but yes you do go straight ahead, go around the round about and then into town.

Once you get used to the road system, very easy to get around, no issue yes some/most of the roads are unsealed, but take time you will get there.

the tourist information centre, well sign posted is a gem, great maps, good information, very helpful.

this is a tropical island, casual holiday spot, do not expect 1st world shopping doesn't exist, but we found everything we needed, we forgot beach towels, but we found great quality Billabong towels there, may be more expensive than Perth, but they had them and I forgot mine, they were there. A great range of meat at the supermarket in the Muslim area, all food stuffs we needed were available at one of the two supermarkets, they are not woollies or Coles down town suburbia, but they had it, may be 10% or 15% dearer than Perth, but similar prices to northwest WA or similar remote locations. BUT, the island is duty free, get your $80 bourbon for $40 or less, same for gin or similar, ciggies are $4 a pack, yes $4 not $50 as in Perth.

Fantastic snorkeling right in town at Flying Fish Cove, just don't go at low tide as the coral/rocks will get you. 50 plus species of fish could easily be seen with 1,000's sighted in a 45 minutes snorkel. We went to the other snorkeling location, Ethel beach, but far too rough, just stick with the easy option.

Dining is quite easy, forget this stuff about packing yr meat from Perth, plenty of good quality options. We dined at the pub several times, good quality reasonably priced pub meals with reasonable wine selection. The two Chinese restaurants both good quality meals, similar prices to main land Australia, and both were licenced or BYO.

Crabs, you could see red crabs in lots of locations, ie our front garden, on the roads in the bush. Robber (Coconut crabs), were harder to find but easily found a lot just past Pink House, at Grant Well, lots of them, just bring food and they will come out.

Tours were great, we used Indian Ocean Tours, Chris was our guide, great job. Don't miss the Grotto, the blowholes, the bird feeding sanctuary, the lizard breeding at Pink house, snorkeling at Flying Fish Cove, the museum ( a good last day outing prior to flying out), the Dales, the great tropical weather.

Just do it.

We have driven through probably half the park and it is beautiful. From tropical vegetation to jungle, loved every bit of it. Some of the tracks to scenic places are a bit on the rough side and quite narrow, but we slowed down and it was fine. Plenty of red crabs and robber crabs everywhere plus a bit of bird life. Some beautiful beaches at the end of the tracks, one that we really wanted to see had the track blocked by a fallen tree. You will need a bit of a sense of adventure as some tracks are a bit rough and ready, but it is well worth it when you get to the end. We’re just sorry our week is nearly over. At least by not seeing all the sites, it gives us motivation to come again

The park occupies 65%of the island so its one of the main reasons to come here...
Firstly . The red crab migration although its everywhere on this island its best seen in the park and there is not many places to stay in the park itself.Swell Lodge is one..The immense amount of nature moving for the spawning at places like Merrial Beach are a sight to behold..literally crabs piled up 3 to 4 deep and on the floor ,walls and dropping down from above even making for crab waterfalls. The spawning is a highlight of the red crab migration..
Secondly the bird life is one of a kind..you will see plenty of red footed boobies in the low lying panadan palms on the cliffs sailing out to catch their fish and the observant frigate birds ready to intervene in their catch..Not to mention the golden bosun's and doves that make a nice sound in the jungle...
Thirdly the scenery is amazing.. the volcanic sea mount that thrust this island up causes fresh water springs to appear in the Dale's you can shower under and drink the freshest of water..so natural...the many sea cliffs that are home to the birds and crabs...
And not to mention the park staff who do an amazing job with the wildlife rehab like the reptile centres work at reintroducing endangered lizards back to the island and the rescue birds that may have struggled in their early years due to feather problems...

All this and more awaits the intrepid visitors to what I can only describe is an absolute garden of Eden...we are so lucky to have this island as a gem for all of us to enjoy..
