Interesting, and good that the record is being kept. Worth the trip to get there and read the story.

This is a more than 100 years old synagogue, very beautiful and a good reminder of the probably nice Jewish community that flourished in Debrecen before WWII, which most of them were murdered in the holocaust

I was quite impressed by the Great Synagogue. It is a beautiful building. Inside they had an exhibit on the Holocaust in Romania.

I went there expecting to find just an old synagogue, but was a great surprise to find in front of me an amazing museum about the Holocaust in Romania! I never listened nothing before in relation with it, and thanks to this exhibition, I could learn a LOT about Antonescu and all the hard things that the jews experienced in Romania. It is a jewel in the middle of the town. If u like the WWII and Holocaust history, is a big MUST DO!

The so-called Great Synagogue is no longer used for religious services, but houses a museum depicting the Jewish experience in Romania, both before and during WW2.
The text is only in Romanian, but the gruesome pictures are enough to depict the horrible realty of those times.
One can only hope that locals and school classes come here and learn.

The free guided tour was fairly informative. However the guide had to talk to some 50 of us by himself. Would have been nicer if they had offered two separate groups.
The exhibition that we saw afterwards was extremely detailed and we learned a lot about not only the sad periods in Jewish history but also about the faith, the rituals and daily life of Jewish people.

The synagogue is a jewel beautiful preserved. The local manager (Shamash) presents the history and contents with devotion and grace. What spoiled the experience was the aggressive rudeness of the 2 Romanian security. They aggressively and rudely demand from each person to pay the small admission fees and treat the visitors with obvious hate and disdain. I observed how they made some visitors leave without visiting the place. It is time for the synagogue manger to replace them.

Is it possible to visit the museum without a private tour?

We stopped in and a docent approached us to explain the place and answer questions. It is a museum of the Holocaust in Romania but the building itself is worth the visit. Her English was nice. It was free. I left a generous donation for the repair and upkeep of what was once an elegant synagogue but today is a bit shabby.

Hello nearest metro station is in Piata Unirii, but there are tramway stations very close to Synagogue in Piata Sf.Vineri. My proposition is: after metro Piata Unirii, walk about 15 minutes maxi from Bulevardul Corneliu Poposu, turn right (when you see tramway rails) ti Strada Sfanta Vineri. Synagogue is hidden at the back of the big building on the left. After visite synagogue, go back to Piata Unirii and begin your visit of old town with Hanul Manuc on the corner.
