After paying 2000 Kmf($4.50) for 2 adults, the docent suggested a tour in French. We ventured the 2 floors of exhibits on our own, deciphering the French descriptions. Of special interest; Island model cutaway showing its encompassing 7,745 Mt. Karthala volcano, last erupting in 2006, the historical local kayak, demonstration of their Ylang ylang perfume production, a wooden 48 hole Awale game board, then a hall of natural history with extinct 400M year old Coelacanth fish(discovered in 1938 and found in deep caves in this area of the western Indian Ocean), Comores Flying fox, Green pigeon and many other local birds.

There were many types of exhibits, including volcano, architecture, plants, insects, and more. But I came to the Comoros specifically to see the coelacanth exhibit. This fish has an ancestry dating back hundreds of millions of years. It's a lobe-fin fish, unlike today's ray-fin fish. It was thought to be long extinct until a live one was accidentally caught in the last century in Comoros waters. It died during the accidental capture process. The coelacanth is a living fossil. There's a population of them around Madagascar.
The museum is nothing fancy, but we'll worth a visit.

This is a very interesting museum and it is certainly well worth a visit. Don't expect to see high-tech screens or touch displays, because it is not that sort of museum. It's an old-fashioned one (I mean this in a very good sense) with a lot information on the country. The exhibit is divided in four parts: on the ground floor there are three different areas: one is dedicated to the volcanic activity on the island, which I found absolutely fantastic as I had climbed the Karthala and wished I had read all the info before the climb); a second area with information on the country's history, architecture and traditions, and a third area with taxidermy animals and examples of several species of butterflies, fish and seashells that can be seen on the islands (as well as in some other countries); on the basement floor one can see several types of instruments, utensils, cloths, boats and an example of a house. There are quite a few very interesting videos, but one must have the patience to listen and watch them in order to learn ;)
Some parts of the exhibit could have an upgrade, as one can see the passing of time in the displays and the information panels, but if you keep an open mind —and don't expect high-tech museum— it will be a great experience.
It took me approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to see everything, but I wished I had had more time. Hope I will one day return to the Comoros to be able to visit it once more.

You would not expect to see the Louvre in Moroni, however, I rather liked the National Museum of the Comoros. The small museum has 4 different sections on two floors, including Fauna & Flora, History, and Arts & Crafts, with a special focus on the volcanic aspects of the islands, with interesting photos and models showing how the area has changed over times. Good labeling of the artifacts allow you to learn more. A number of international organizations have supported the museum in upgrading their presentation, including the Swedes and the ever present Turkish Tika. There’s also an adjacent library and archives, and a little book shop selling books with Comorian topics. - Compared to other small African national museums I found this a very well-organized place and well worth a visit - I spent a great 90 minutes at the place.

This museam doesn't have much in it but is worth a quick visit nonetheless for the artifacts and history.

The artifacts here have little interest and are poorly organized. If you are expecting this to be a well organized museum due to being the national museum, you will be disappointed. Does not reflect well on the country, its culture, its history.
