It didn’t open. I went along on a Wednesday morning, having checked that the opening hours were 10am to 5pm.
So at 10am I and several bus loads of tourists found ourselves staring at the notice on the locked gates, telling us that it opened at 10am, but it was closed and it remained closed.
I stayed until 10.25am, during which time the other tourists drifted back to their buses and were driven away.
In the end, with no sign of it opening and no staff anywhere, I gave up and left.
That’s Uruguay for you. It was a sunny morning, so perhaps the staff felt they had more interesting things to do than open up the stadium for all those pesky tourists.
Hugely disappointing.

Entry fee is 300 pesos for the museum and stadium. Can pay an additional 150 pesos to access the observation deck of the tower (we did not elect to do this). Cool to see original World Cup stadium, though it is surprisingly outdated (especially if you have recently visited the Mas Monumental across the Rio de la Plata). Museum has a truly random collection of World Cup and Uruguayan sports history, though the focus is on the Uruguayan soccer heyday in the first half of the 20th century. There are also some caricatures of musicians who have performed in the stadium with some enjoyable name misspellings.

A piece of football history where the first world cup was played. It was closed when we got there but the stadium is impressive to look at.

I couldn't visit the football museum and the stadium. Apparently it's not available to visit during holidays. How terrible is that? Maybe the most famous sightseeing of the city and it's not available to visit - durin summer time holiday. UNBELIVABLE!!!

As a rabid fan of the beautiful game, visit to the site of the 1st World Cup was a treat. The stadium is the home of the Uruguay National team. The museum was more static than interactive. Exhibits of the history of the sport, but may not entertain non-fans. Our family was fascinated by the displays, but we have traveled to a few WCs together. Touring the stadium was cool for a fanatic. The construction itself was interesting.
The tour is worth it only if you are passionate for the game.

We drove past the stadium as part of our Montevideo City Tour. If you are a soccer fan, then this is a must see. Soccer’s first FIFA World Cup took place here.

We enjoyed seeing the stadium. The staff was nice and bathrooms were clean. We stayed about 1.5 hours and found that to be sufficient.

The Estadio Centerario holds 65,000 people. It was built for the very first World Cup in 1930, won by host Uruguay. The national team plays its games here. The facility is in the Prado district.

A wealth of history and on FIFA’s website due to its historical importance in the game. In its heyday this grand old lady must have been something to behold when heaving at the seams with a capacity crowd. Sadly, now a poor shadow of its former glory. Being so important in FIFA’s own mind maybe some investment should be made by the governing body as we approach the anniversary of Uruguay’s works cup win. Still definitely worth seeing if you have any interest in football. We did the stadium with museum tour.

It is a stadium that brings back impressions of the 30s and 50s. Built 100 years after the constitution was established in Uruguay and hosted the world cup that Uruguay won. It feels old as it enters its 9th decade but this feeling is what exactly makes it a piece of football history. The tower is an imposing structure overseeing the stadium. You can visit the tribunes but not the pitch. Great experience.
