Very interesting! It's always good to see a landmark in person. The cultural center is also interesting, especially a little shop with Chilean food items (from spices to kombucha) and the arts and crafts section. Try to see the guard change. It's also interesting.

This is the presedential palace situated on a nice square in downtown Santiago.
If you have time, you can see the changing of the guards.
Nice statue of Alende, but a bit hidden in a corner.

La Moneda is the seat of the president of Chile. It also houses the offices of three cabinet ministers. It occupies most of a large block in the Civic District of downtown Santiago. It looks much like other parliamentary buildings around the world, but well worth seeing. La Monda, is of neoclassical design by an Italian architect and was originally built as a Mint . In 1973, during the military coup, the building was bombed by the Chilean air force. The building was rebuilt some years later although some bullet marks remain and have been preserved. Well worth a visit.

Need to make reservations in advance online. There is no fee. You will need to provide your passport information when you make a request for a reservation. We received a prompt email back saying that they received our information and would be confirming it within a week or so. I didn't hear back from them so wrote them an email in Spanish and heard back almost immediately that our reservation had been confirmed. There was not a changing of the guard when we were there due to the protests. We had a 9:30 AM reservation. It was written that we should arrive 15 minutes early. The guards do not speak any English but understood that we were there for the tour. You will need to have your passport with you or you will not be allowed to enter the palace. The second set of security at the palace entrance will take your passport and give you a security clearance neck sign. Your passport will be returned as you exit the tour. The tour takes about 1 hour. We signed up for the English tour but everyone else on the tour spoke Spanish. Fortunately, our guide did translate in well-spoken English. You will not be allowed to take purses or backpacks into the palace but there is a place to store them free of charge. Photos without flash are allowed. There were about 12 people in our group. The maximum is 25. Tours are conducted at 9:30, 11, 15:00 and 16:30 on Monday through Friday. Our tour guide was excellent and gave a great tour. We were able to see the courtyard, entrance where the officials/kings/presidents enter (but not able to go in that area as the President of Estonia was arriving in 30 minutes), Chapel, pointed out office where Allende died, saw Presidential medals of each Chilean President, and memorial to Allende due to his death here as well as the First Lady's office. A guard was always following our tour. So glad that we were able to have this wonderful experience!

Really interesting to look around this place. Lots to see and learn. Had a tour arranged through the government website with a very knowledgeable guide who spoke very good English. And it's free!

When I was still a young man, the name of this palace was among few things I new about Santiago, so it was interesting to look at it - it is small, not pompous. On the square nearby there are busts of all the Chilean presidents

Palacio de La Moneda or simply La Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. It also houses the offices of three cabinet ministers: Interior, General Secretariat of the Presidency and General Secretariat of the Government. It occupies an entire block in downtown Santiago, in the area known as Civic District. Certainly worth seeing this interesting building with a local guide to learn more about it’s history.

La Moneda Palace is the home of the country’s president. You should visit for the changing of the guard ceremony. The spectacle is carried out with all the pomp that one would expect of such an event – but with the surreal bonus of a brass band accompaniment of well-known pop songs that you might not expect. The palace is full of history. In 1973 the palace was bombarded by Pinochet’s military forces in a coup d’état against then president Salvador Allende. Visitors are allowed to freely wander through the inner courtyards, as well as reserve a free tour through the palace

We did the tour which is organized through the official government website. With the protests going on security was tight around the building and not many smiling faces from the government employees. The inside of the palace is amazing and there it lots of history that you learn from the tour. Our guide didn't have the best English which made the tour a little difficult.
