I wanted to get some authentic batik and also see how it was done - several reviews gave this place as a site where I could watch it being made , and my driver also gave me a big thumbs up

Was more than I could hope for - though only a short distance from Taman Sari , the bustle of the big streets doesn’t reach here and I was the only person seeing the artisans at work

A staff who could speak english explained all the processes of batik making - so exquisite , fine details and so much work !! I now appreciate the reason some of the real things cost what it does - as it takes end to end 2 months from the drawing , wax painting , dying , taking off - and the wax-dye- takeoff process happens as many times as the colors on it ! With final details painted - the price is not to complain for
All the people were intently at work but smiles humbly when I ask if I can take a photo :-)

The staff took me to the shop afterwards but all he did was point out the corners of where stuff was ( salongs, tablecloths etc ), quickly showed me price , and then generally left me alone , which is rare to get in tourist shopping places
I did shop quite a bit as the product quality was so fine

Would recommend to anyone who likes observing art in action, or a soft spot for great fabrics !

Everyone was friendly and helpful. We managed to talk to the owner of Batik Plentong and he gave a great and meaningful explanation of the value of batik. My friends and I had a great time there. Try the batik workshop !

We stumbled upon this place and since they were open, we went it. They gave us a thorough tour in English and allowed us as much time as we wanted. The staff was so friendly in showing us their technique. We would've missed the opportunity to take a class and make our own batik if we hadn't directly asked if they had such a thing. Their response was " yes, you can take one right now." It really gave us a chance to try a limited project and appreciate how difficult it is to do batik well. We were still proud of our work and the staff helped us to make it look better. The gift shop was huge and though the prices were higher than in the local markets, the quality was beautiful and we didn't mind paying for some items knowing how hard they work there. So much fun. It was our last day in Jakarta and it was worth every second we spent there.

Via our driver we visit the batik factory. Its a small factory who makes the batik by hand and a quicker way with a stamp. The big difference with a stamp the design is the same and cheaper, the real handwork the pattern is made withe a drawing made by hand, and every shape will be by hand with wax made. Everywere were the wax is there's no color.

I am interested in Textiles and this shop and factory takes you through the process of how hand painted batik is done. The gift shop had lots of things to offer from clothing to houshold textiles and pictures. The prices were quite expensive but considering the work that goes into each piece well worth the price asked. I purchased a batik tie for my son at a cost of $20.00 There was also some beautiful silks but you are looking at prices starting at $50.00 or more.

Batik is key in Indonesia and Jogja. There are lots of places offering batik, but this was recommended by locals (not guide). And locals who heard I'd visited would say "good place for batik..." or nod approvingly. A very good sign.
There are staff who speak English quite fluently. For a tiny fee, you can make your own batik - about the size of a napkin - and take it home. How cool is that?! It doesn't take long too (maybe an hour's visit).
Get a tour of the workshop behind - it is fascinating. The tour is free. Of course you'll feel obliged to then buy some batik even though they don't press you.
The quality of Batik is very good. The price is comparable to what you'd get at the malls but at least here you know you have the good stuff.
The staff are lovely. Very helpful, from explaining batik to helping you choose batik. When I suddenly became unwell, one quickly offered hot sweet tea while sitting with me quietly to make sure I recovered. Two thumbs up.

We were taken to this place as part of a tour of the city, and I didn't have high hopes at first, but it was my favourite part of the tour! So interesting to see all of the skilled workers designing and creating the fabrics, and our guide spoke brilliant English and was very interesting to chat with. My partner and I enjoyed it so much that we arranged to return the next day and try our hand at designing and making some fabric of our own, for only 50,000 IDR - it was so much fun and so worth it! The workers really included and helped us, and if I'd had the time I would have returned a third time! I would recommend for anyone of any age.

I was absolutely blown away when taken to the production area of Batik Plentong and saw everyone working away, hand drawing designs, stamping designs, soaking and dyeing the batik. One of the employees gave us a tour in very good English and explained the whole process of how batik is made and the nuance between the different types. A great place to see batik and buy batik! I bought a sarong (I'm a long time wearer of sarongs, having lived in SEAsia for a few years) and it is top quality!
