After visiting the National Museum I stumbled upon this monument in a small park near St:Georges Cathedral. It intrigued me, since it must me about the only memorial in the world to the Non-Aligned Movement, founded 1961 in Belgrade. The monument can only be looked at from behind a closed gate. But the bronze busts of the four founding fathers of this movement can easily be discerned: From left to right: President Nasser of Egypt, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jawaharlal Nehru of India and President Tito of then Yugoslavia (the name plaques of the last two are now missing and it looks as if Nkrumah's bust is not made from bronze).

Near the closed gate is an information board about this nationally protected monument, giving plenty of details, also about the origin of the stones that have been used to adorn.this concrete plinth with the four busts: a base of quartz from Mazaruni, the four jasper rocks from Orinduik, colourful pebbles from Guyana's riverbeds in the small pool. The reason for the construction of this monument had been a 1972 conference, held in Georgetown, with the foreign ministers of Non-Aligned countries (thus not belonging either to the US dominated or the UdSSR dominated bloc during the Cold War).

We strolled by this monument as we walked around downtown Georgetown after visiting the Cathedral. It is very close to the cathedral. There was no fence around it.

Located right next to St. George's cathedral is the Non Aligned Monument. Although the monument is in some disrepair, Tito's name plate is missing, it is still worth a visit. Featured on the monument are the world leaders who founded the Non Aligned Movement: President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, President Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, President Jawaharlal Nehru of India, an President Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia.

The 4 heads on this non aligned monument situated close to St George's Cathedral commemorates the 1972 conference of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned Countries held in Guyana in August 1972. The Founders beings presidents from Egypt, Ghana, India & Yugoslavia. The 4 jasper rocks in front of the statues are from the Orinduik Falls on the Brazil boarder line. The monument was in a locked gated section when I visited, so could only be viewed from a short distance away.
