The zoo has a range of animals including wild cats, monkeys, birds, and caiman. Some of them like the harpy eagles are quite unique to see and wouldn't be present in zoos in other parts of the world.
It's however very much showing its age with lack of maintenance and bad conditions for many of the animals with small enclosures which is sad to see for them.

This zoo is an abomination! The poor leopard is kept chained and in an enclosure so tiny it can only pace back and forth with no floor padding on the bare concrete which is terrible for the soft feet of cats that are accustomed to walking on grasses in the wild. EVEN MY HOUSE CAT HAS MORE SPACE TO MOVE AROUND THAN THIS BEAUTIFUL LEOPARD! This is not a celebration of the beautiful creatures indigenous to Guyana. When I visited there was even an advertisement that they would be receiving an African elephant. That is going to be the loneliest, saddest elephant. This zoo should be restructured as a sanctuary. I would happily donate for such a project that actually celebrates South America's biodiversity and keeps animals in their natural habitats and protects them. We seek out such institutions to learn about these animals but not at the cost of their suffering.

I came here for a school trip and there were only a few mammals, birds and reptiles. It's not a zoo that tourists would be interested in visiting due to that lack of diversity. The place could be sanitized a bit more but it's spacious and nice for kids to explore.

Unfortunately I was a little disappointed with the animals that were on display. They were less than I saw on previous years but still have some exciting animals. Not sure why this was and can only assume that there is some financial neglect in maintaining the population.

For just a couple of dollars you get to see animals you don’t often see in the US… The grounds are spacious and it’s a really fun day to walk around… In a couple hours you’ve seen it all and are ready for a cold drink...but not with the monkeys!

We visited the zoo one afternoon and it was a nice way to spend an hour or so. We saw the manatee before we even bought our tickets. Inside the zoo, we saw birds, monkeys, ocelots, cougars, a jaguar, caimen and a bunch of other animals. The zoo may not be like what you are used to as the animals are still kept in cages for the most part or have small enclosures, but they are well kept and you are able to get close to the animals (safely) which is cool.

My favorite exhibit was the giant river otter cage; they were so active, playing about the enclosure. Like most of the exhibits, space was small, not natural. Staff seems to genuinely care about their animals.

Truly old guard. Clearly the funding for this is almost nothing. The staff look like they are trying but the cages, the lay out, everything is old, old school. Nothing fair to the animals here. You can feel their pain.

One of the best things to see at the Guyana Zoo by the Botanical Garden is the pond with two West Indian Manatees inside. It is located outside the Zoological Park proper, for which a small entrance fee is asked. We skipped this part, because we had come mainly for the Botanical Garden, but also after reading how the animals were kept in depressingly small cages, as is so often the case in less developed countries.
We felt lucky to be able to follow the two manatees in the seaweed covered pond and how they were going through it like lawnmowers. We were standing on a small footbridge over the pond, but could naturally not see much of their massive body, just part of the head with the mouth. On the same pond, but well visible were Northern Jacana's (Jacana spinosa), walking with their large feet and claws over the floating vegetation.
There is a sign that fishing and littering is not allowed. In fact nobody was fishing, but the pond was full of discarded plastic bottles and other litter.
