We were charged US$60 per person, which included the cost of the minibus from downtown Georgetown to the Distillery & back for our group.

Very expensive for what we actually got, which was a (very) brief look at some barrels stacked up in a nearby warehouse, plus a brief talk in a nearby building with some mini-replica distillery equipment.

The two ladies 'running' the tour were lovely but didn't know much and were unable to answer any questions.

The is no formal factory outlet, but there is a 'cash & carry' around the corner which sells several of the El Dorado brands of rum, as well as other food/drink items.

The best part was the tasting, of which we tried several and they were generous with the measures, although in all honesty we would have been better off buying a few bottles ourselves and just drinking them in the park.

The Heritage Centre has excellent displays of the various types of stills used in production of rum and the video session is interesting. There is a brief visit to the warehouse but no visit to the working distillery.
We enjoyed the tasting session,5yr old, single cask and finally the sublime 15 year old. The 15 year old is nectar and an excellent rum that has won many international awards understandably.
Strangely tickets have to be bought off site at a DSL shop, cost 4000 GYD, also best contact and confirm your tour online. I had a very prompt and friendly response to my request.
Our tour guide was very pleasant and welcoming but did not have the knowledge expected nor had tasted the products!!
The Centre would benefit greatly by offering the other products in the range for sale at the bar. There is no merchandise on site.
This Company would benefit from Marketing as it produces world class rum but is relatively unknown outside of Guyana. Once you are aware of El Dorado it can be found in a few select merchants in the UK. It should be widely available.

What does one expect of a distillery tour? Answer: they show you around and explain the distilling process. What do you get here? A short introductory talk in the visitors centre by a guide who admittedly knows nothing about the technicaltis of rum making. A short visit to the warehouse where you can make photos of the barrels. And a promotional video you can probably find on YouTube. When asked, the guide said that the tour used to include the distilling process, but that the management had decided to 'change the package'. Of course, she couldn't help it (and she was actually very nice), but this tour is absolutely worthless. Cost: 4,000 Guyanese dollars (16 euros). Crap, in other words.

That said, at the end you get to drink samples of 3 different rums. Because of the fact that some people didn't like rum, I had a couple more, which definitely added to the experience.

To sum it up: heavily overpriced, non-informative bogus tour. But the rum is nice.

I emailed the company; an appointment set up to visit; but I had to conform by phone 24 hours before, I did so ; You see I have a voice issue, My voice shakes/ tremor, I suffer with a damage vocal cord, so when I called I probably sound like a 99 years lady.well that did it. The lady promised to call me back to confirm my reservation.
she never did, although I explained to her of my voice issue. I know I am probably stronger than her I run 3 miles daily and I push 103 lbs so how fragile can I be.This is sad to discriminate.

We were from Canada and England and all drink El Dorado and were really anticipating this part of our trip and especially to show our children what one of Guyana's largest export brands is about.

We have been on tours of other distilleries throughout the world - Bushmills in Ireland, Anheuser Busch in the U.S., Heineken in the Netherlands, Curacao etc. to name a few.
When we have 12 people paying $17.50 USD each and especially with such an international brand as El Dorado, I would have expected top notch service and want to make you aware step by step of the unacceptable situation.

Firstly, there was a mix up with the times and we were kept waiting half an hour past our 2:00 p.m. start time until it was sorted out. Your guide did apologize profusely and several times and I understand that mistakes do occur. However, one immediate observation is that regardless there should be benches for seating while we wait to sign in and get the safety hats.

We were very surprised at how run-down and shabby everything was - something a quick coat of paint can easily fix. Even more surprising was that your two large tanks were completely exposed outdoors with no covering of any kind. When we enquired of the guide how insanitary this was, she replied that very rarely does anything fall in and that it gets distilled anyway. This was a huge joke as while she was saying this, we were watching flies and insects dive-bombing into the tanks and pointed it out to her.

Through no fault of her own and probably because she has not received proper training, we found her to be woefully lacking in answering the simplest of questions - some examples include: what type of wood the original Coffey stills are made of, how the high wine fits into the base distillate process, the meaning of the word "Demerara", some basic dates and statistics as to the shipping process and how much is shipped and to which countries etc. etc. etc. After a while it became apparent that she was way out of her depth and so we just stopped asking questions.

I don't understand either why we were not allowed to see the bottling process? We certainly have with other similar tours.

Even more surprising was that we were expected to walk from the distillery over to the Guest Centre. Fortunately, we had our mini van waiting for us that transported us over. In tours of this kind, we typically have seen the tour provide this kind of transportation - a couple of large golf-cart type vehicles would work just fine (like at the Giftland Mall).

The Centre could offer so much more - we wanted to buy souvenirs and there were none available. You could also have had a bottle of the 50 year old Anniversary rum on display in a class case under lock and key. We were confident that it would have been there and were looking forward to viewing it.

As well, I cannot believe that we were rationed to one small shot each of only 3 rums - 2 of which were your cheapest. I would have thought that maybe the High Wine and the cream Liqueur would have been included at a very minimum for the price we paid. A couple of people (not all 12) in our group requested a refill and were refused. Note that our driver who was one of the 12 paying guests did not drink at all.

Even more perplexing is that for a company who bottles water could not provide water in the washrooms and had to give us bottles of water to wash our hands with when we used the washroom facilities.

We went in a small group. There was a bit of delay due to late arrival of two other participants but once it got going the tour was excellent - smelly, noisy and up-close to the action. Truly historic and has the last two original Wooden Pot Stills in full operation in the world. The guide was excellent in explaining the art of rum-making - more complex and skilled than we had supposed. Nice little museum and tasting at the end

We arranged for a tour for 5 of us two days before the tour. We arrived on time, checked in at security and waited for the guide and waited and waited.
We called every 10 minutes and got a different reason for the delay and a much different status. After 30 minutes they said the guide was coming from Georgetown. They should have been there already as it takes 30 minutes to get there from Georgetown ! After almost an hour we were asked if we would like to reschedule. We were leaving the next day so that was not even a possibility. They would not even let us see the museum or use the bathroom near the museum without the guide.
I think with us they never intended to come out that day…

This tour is not to be missed. The history and size of this gritty facility is noteworthy. I enjoyed our tour guide but be prepared to not hear all of what he says....it is a loud distillery. The rum tasting after was the icing on the cake. Buy your 15 year old rum in duty free in the airport.....you will save quite a bit.

As other reviewers have said, book this yourself - the tour costs $3000GY and a taxi there and back is easy to arrange.
Interesting tour and a knowledgeable guide Patrick

Interesting tour but do not go with any of the tour agencies who sell this tour for about 70 USD. The real price is 15 USD. Contact DDL through their website to make a reservation for the tour. Take mini-bus 42 from Stabroek market and get out at DDL sales (100 GYD one way), you can buy your ticket for the tour there.
