The energy museum is seemingly away from the frantic pace of Istanbul. The machines seem almost monolithic when viewed. I was lucky to view it at my pace with no visitors at the time. The infra red interactive installation was wonderful.

It is a free museum about energy and very fantastic. At first floor you can make a lot of small trials and see the results. Second floor is so huge and amazing since there are lots of machines. This museum is in Istanbul Bilgi university santral campus. You can go there a by bus

Once upon a time " Silahtarağa Electricity power santral " which was established in the year of 1914 in Istanbul during Ottoman Empire time to privide electricity to the city .
I was thinking of that central ( santral) was was demelished so many years ago till visiting that " Santral Energy Museum" recently.
Another surprise to me it was just inside and amongst an university units. , namelyd " Bilgi Üniversitesi ", . Actually central or say Electricity power factory was maintained " as is ", needless to state, it is nor working..!!!

Well, to see the old technology and being with some students, and running around may give you a nice memory and feel good . And also you may join some exhibitions over there.

you may ask a museum tour guide which may take less than hour and ask everything whatsoever you wanna ask
not only for museum but also the exhibitions and about the university.

Enjoy it. Afterwards go the coast of Haliç ( Golden Horn ) have your day more enjoyable. There are a lot going around..

Santral Istanbul is always a good idea with kids. The Energy Museum entrance is free now. Toilets are always clean. There is a new shop and cafe in the museum building. The concept is wonderful. Coffee was great.
Some experiments were broken. I hope these will be fixed soon.

I have never bought a museum's t-shirt. But here, I HAD to have one to tell the world just how much of a fan I am of Santral Istanbul!
Half of the time I walked around with my mouth open, the other half I was having way too much fun taking pictures of all the old machines, control panels etc.
There are also some informative "games" on the ground floor, that are really cool, not just for kids.
I enjoyed the entire atmosphere and will definitely go back on a future trip to Istanbul.
A little stroll around the university is also nice and they have a great restaurant that is open for visitors.
You can see more about it in my travel blog: http://meissoun.blogspot.ch/2015/04/istanbul-very-big-and-very-small-things.html

Located on the ground of Bilgi University just north of the end of the Golden Horn, this now decommissioned electric generating plant was probably the first in Istanbul and was obviously expanded over time as power needs increased.

A VERY important thing: Even if you write the name and address of this museum on paper and have fair Turkish language skills neither taxi drivers nor most people in the immediate vicinity are likely to have the faintest idea where you want to go! Be CERTAIN to include "Bilgi Universitesi" as taxi drivers and locals will know where you want to go!

Besides the turbines, dynamos (some cut open to display their inner workings) and large control room on the upper floor, you can visit the boilers below. Among the boilers you will find some excellent interactive displays demonstrating some very interesting properties of electricity.

There is a photography museum adjacent but we did not have time to visit.

While not the sort of place I recommend if you have only a short time to tour Istanbul, it is a GREAT place if you want something different and well away from the crowds. Other interesting things to see in the general area (along the eastern shore of the Golden Horn) include Miniaturk and the Koç Museum of Transportation.

There is no entrance fee.

You can reach at this Museum by shuttle bus departing from Kabataş Ferry or by boat from Üsküdar,Karaköy and Eminönü to Eyüp and then a short walk to the venue.Very interesting to see the amazing and interesting old big power stations of İstanbul. It was very quiet when we were there.Very nice to pay a visit to it.If you book early by email, they also have some special guided tours available.Worth to go there.

Santral museum was nearly empty the day we visited which was great for photos - the old power plant is still in great condition and made for gorgeous haunting photos of the enormous, silent generators. The control room looks like something out of a Mad Max movie, so cool !! We spent an hour taking photos in the power plant, and tried out some of the hands-on electrical exhibits. It's all free. The grounds of the university are very calm and peaceful, with a couple nice cafes. You can take a free shuttle bus to Santral from the bus station at Kabatas. Highly recommended!

This former power plant is now a well maintained energy museum with some interactive exhibits that the kids will love! There's also an on-site cafe serving up surprisingly good food. This is near to the Pierre Loti cafe so a good day out for 2 attractions.

This is an old electricity factory if I understood it right. So it is showing how it looked like in one of those old ones. They had some hands-on energy expositions at that time there too - it was very interesting to try them out. And everything was for free.
