We were fortunate to visit at the same time as they were celebrating Naval Day in Istanbul, so we were allowed to visit for free, which was a real bonus. This museum is situated on several floors and recommend several hours to visit this outstanding museum. It has a magnificent display of boats ships going through the ages. The history of this naval country is comprehensive and interesting. Well worth a visit.

Great Ottoman boats and a wonderful diving equipment collection. Easy to get there on the Bestikas ferry. Spend 1-2 hours

This museum is near the Dolmabahce Palace which is why we visited it. It is housed in a modern building which was designed to provide a dedicated space suitable to its contents. There is a café, good toilets, souvenir shop, etc. Photos without flash on your mobile are fine but if you use a “professional” camera or take video recordings there is a 270 Turkish lira fee which I had to pay. On the other hand, they were one of the Istanbul museums which celebrate International Women's Day by giving women free entry so that was a lucky win for me when I attended on that day.

The main floor has an amazing display of wooden caïques (boats), some of which date back to the 16th century. You can walk along the sides of the room to view the boats and you are able to go up a ramp to the walkways which contain smaller boats. You can look down on the bigger boats from there but the view is often obstructed. In the basement there is a collection of antique ship artifacts, figureheads, ship's names, ship models, busts of admirals, maps and lots of displays about the Ottoman era naval history and modern Turkish navies. There are two rooms dedicated to Atatürk's state yacht. Exhibitions when we were there were on historical diving equipment, martyrs and veterans and naval uniforms.

Beautifully renovated naval museum, with four or five floors of displays with full-size historical caiques; excellent historical narrative of Ottoman naval history from 15th-century to present. Wall texts and labels in Turkish and English. Accessible by ferry (Beşiktaş), as well as by bus.

This is a very interesting museum about the history of the Ottoman/Turkish navy. I learned lots looking at some of the exhibits. I was particularly moved by some of the exhibits in the exhibition for the martyrs. I was there the same time as a school children's group, if you find yourself followed by one, go back, let them pass, they seem to pass through quickly then you will be left in peace again.

The museum starts with showing busts of famous admirals, before showing ceremonial galleys used by the Ottoman sultans. The exhibition continues on various levels, with many detailed exhibits on the navy throughout the centuries, up until the present day. I found the section on the old diving equipment particularly interesting.

This museum is not only very well located with loads to do in the area but as a building is super impressive.

The artefacts are humongous and have a lot of history attached.

I thoroughly recommend a visit if you’re in Istanbul.

I haven’t expected this museum to be so big and rich. Exhibit starts with pleasure boats (real ones!) of pashas but then you are being introduced to the whole history of Turkish navy, from galleons to modern frigates and destroyers some of which are still in service. Models are more than many. Apart from that - lots of education materials, private things of the most famous captains, pictures of the most significant battles, diving equipment - omg hard to enumerate all of it. And a special wow to how nicely everything is presented and compiled.

You are going to be exhausted by the end and probably get tired of reading, so I plan to visit again some day. Also there’s a souvenir shop that sells lovely things (key chains, badges, cufflinks etc) so cheap!!! I was shocked. But it closes around 16, so don’t come too late
