In the local market, you can immerse yourself in a real life that is boiling here without ceasing? Excursion to the delicious places of Istanbul was just wonderful! First we tried all Turkish sweets.

As a group of expats living in Istanbul we thought it was time to learn how to make a few of the dishes we were seeing around us daily. Olga didn't disappoint, and even allowed us to choose one of the dishes to attempt cooking (it turned out wonderfully)! each of us have replicated the success of the day with one or more of the recipes.
Olga herself was warm and knowledgeable. She really got us doing the work with insightful supervision, which is what you want in a cooking class.
I'll be recommending Olga to our new staff arriving next year.

In our last day in Istanbul, we decided to take a cooking class, and we were lucky to pick Olga. She is an extraordinary cook, guide tour and person. Everything that we prepared was delicious and the places that she took us was very interesting. We'll do it again. Thanks Olga

We had a great time, tried some best dishes, different varieties, very elegantly presented by Olga. The tour was well thought-through. We visited small and big markets, food stores and coffe shops. What was great about the tour that all those places were not the obvious. Also, she mentioned that the tour would end around 2:30, but was more than willing to stay with us longer. We finished around 4pm (for the same price). She was eager and willing to answer questions and later I emailed Olga for a reference of a restaurant with a particular dish and got an immediate response with a very good choice.

I have joined Olga’s Breakfast Club a few times, and every time I took a huge pleasure in it. Olga is considering herself a food-blogger, a food-photographer, and a fanatic cook.

Her menu has always a certain concept, not necessarily Turkish though. She will prepare all the goodies in front of her guests while explaining about them. Although not being a native Turk, I think many locals could learn a lot about their own food and traditions from her. Not only Olga’s knowledge is impressing, but also her enthusiasm.

No doubt, one can buy a tasty Turkish breakfast at many places in the city, but here you will get a few things you probably won’t find elsewhere:
1. The varieties. While a restaurant will serve you just a few, Olga is always offering quite a number of different types of cheese, olives, jams etc., purchased directly from the producers.
2. The explanation about what you eat.
3. The company. This is an attraction by itself! You will meet diverse people from many corners of the world, all with different backgrounds: visitors, locals as expats. After the ice is broken, the guests will engage in talking about any subject from touristic experiences through business and work, up to family, politics, whatsoever. These chats are delightful and exciting.

So, if you feel like spending a relaxed weekend-day with eating and meeting in a lovely atmosphere, most probably there is no better place in Istanbul! As the number of attendees is limited, make sure you reserve your spot in time.

We spent a week in Istanbul this September, and Olga's food tour was one of the highlights of our trip! It was a pleasure spending time with Olga, and we were able to try many different foods and drinks. It was a great intro to Turkish cuisine and a fabulous way to start off our trip.

Although Olga's actual tour was decent, she left us with our of our most horrific travel experiences ever:

She took us to a Turkish Delight shop called Şekerci Aytekin Erol (Caferzade) in Karakoy. We picked 5 boxes to take to the US, but the employees suggested other (more expensive ones btw), because they were supposedly "sealed" better for travel. They said (and Olga confirmed) that the candy should last up to a few WEEKS.

Well, when we got back to the US within a few DAYS, we opened one to find it completely UNSEALED with WORMS crawling around inside--yes, like live, vomit-inducing, most disgusting thing you could ever imagine in a candy box--WORMS.

Needless to say, I immediately threw them all away (can't even think about if we had ended up giving those as gifts to our friends...) Don't think I'll ever be able to eat Turkish Delight again either...

I contacted Olga and sent her a video, etc. She said she would contact the shop but still no reply after 2+ weeks. After spending $300 on her tour, I'm obviously upset that she wouldn't even take some responsibility since she vouched for them.

I ended up filing a dispute on my credit card but it never should have come to that.

I am very sorry for your unfortunate Turkish delight experience as I have told you in the email. The shop I have brought you to and I vouched for is an established family-run business that has been around for decades. I have personally purchased many boxes of Turkish delight from them as gifts for my friends here in Istanbul and abroad. Also, many of my customers from all over the world have purchases and safely took home their Turkish delight. Given all that, both me and the shop staff was shocked to hear about the insects in your boxes. As I told you in the email I am totally committed to get your money back to you. I explained to you in the email the refund may take longer than you'd expect it back home, so I am sorry that it's still in progress. The delay is explained by three circumstances 1) the day you informed me about the warms I was leaving for a two week vacation which made it hard to follow up on this issue with the shop; 2) the shop owners (=decision makers) were away too since the Bayram celebrations (=high season for them) was over, and they went away to get some deserved rest, fair enough; 3) the shop has no experience with a refund to a foreign credit card, so it took a while for them to discuss internally how to proceed. I have been to the shop 4 times since your visit to discuss the situation and insist on the refund. I am still confident you will get your money back, but I can't say when. With your review you have left me in a very difficult situation here. I understand you were grossed out by the insect sand sorry about the money and the gifts that did not happen. The review here does not help get your money back and doesn't affect my commitment to help you, but hurts my business while am doing my best to get your money refunded. I feel you've chosen an unfair way to solve the issue.

At the last minute we had an extra day to kill in Istanbul. Searched for fun things to do for 2 couples and came up with a cooking class. Found Olgas contact details on the internet, sent off an email and she got back to us quickly. We spent the very next day with her and enjoyed every moment, from walking around the markets, to being welcomed into her home for the cooking experience. Olga makes it very clear on her website about expectations, she is not Turkish, but is married to one. She cooks from her home, not a commercial kitchen. And most importantly she is passionate about food! And boy does she know her food!! We asked numerous questions about the things in the markets, what they were, where did it come from and how is it used. She knew it all. She also sourced produce in season so it was fresh and delicious. Yes home is an apartment, pretty much what most people live in when you live in this district. We were set up around the kitchen bench where it was easy to hear and see what Olga was doing, and yes we prepared the dishes from scratch getting tips on cutting things right etc as we went along. This was ideal for people who are not chefs but like us, wanting to delve into the local cuisine. Her dishes were based on her mother in laws recipes so traditional Turkish food, and delicious. Accompanied by a nice class of Turkish wine. Olga not only spoke about food but also was knowledgeable about other topics we were interested in, politics, way of life in Turkey and more. We appreciated her candid answers. A great day was had by all, thank you Olga.

I found her class thru a blog of chefs and trip advisor
My husband and I enjoyed the class, however it was not "quite" what she advertised.
The walk thru the market was fun and very interesting. I would have liked her to talk a bit more about the market and the relationships she had with the vendors.
The cooking was fine, but like others have pointed out Olga did most of the cooking - it was in her house which was fine, however the kitchen was small and not really set up for a commercial venture such as this.
The food was great, but not worth the $200.00 we paid for the day.

Thank you for sharing your opinion about my cooking class. I am surprised to hear your comment about my "small" kitchen: many of my guests who actually live in Istanbul are vowed by the size of my kitchen that opens into a living room. Besides you and your husband, there was just one more person joining the class that day: I did not see anybody struggling with the space. I did not remember anybody sitting idle during the class that's why it would be unfair to say that I did all the cooking. Cooking is not limited to standing by the stove. It is about knowing and gathering ingredients, about preparation and finally about cooking the meal. I tried to walk you through and join me in every single step in this process. You've paid US$250, to be exact, but it was not supposed to be for the food. The fee includes the market walks, tastings at the market and then cooking class with full guidance. If you hoped to get that fee back in the food worth, I am sorry: probably a meal at a fancy restaurant was a better idea than a cooking class for you.

I just got back from Istanbul and i love the city. I will definitely be back again. there are so much to see and do. A week wasn't quite enough.

I found Delicious Istanbul through Trip advisor after looking through a lot of the classes. I chose this class because availability which matched my schedule. Olga described herself as a food blogger and her interests in food and food photography.

Well, there are the reasons why i think this class is a No for me. I would very much like to share the experience with the fellow travelers and perhaps Olga herself.

Well, the day started off at the meeting point on the Asian Side. I was a solo participant. There were 4 other girls in the same group. We walked through a local market and stopped a long the way at different local shops. Olga picked up some of the ingredients during our walk. We also tried Turkish coffee and staple dessert ; Baklava. I think this part of the class was decent.

Finally, we took a quick tram ride to her apartment where the cooking took place. It was an apartment with a fairly small kitchen. If you are expecting to be a turkish homy home, please don't get your hope up because the place we were looks like it could be any apartment in the world. You weren't feel like you in a turkish home. I was a bit surprised that the cooking stations weren't set up for us. The ingredients weren't prepared for the class to begin once to get to the kitchen. We sat on the other side of the kitchen watching Olga gathered every little ingredients and put together our cooking stations which I found very unprepared and unorganized.

We did make 1 baked dessert, an entree and 4 different side dishes/ starters. There were no printed recipes as a reference. She did promise to email us the recipes. Unless the email got missing. I did not receive any email from her. (i did check my junk mail as well)

Speaking about participation in the kitchen. As i mentioned, we were on the other side of the counter. We pretty much did the chopping, dicing, slicing, grating. We did not get to COOK. I did get a chance to sweat some onions. However, the rest of the participants didn't. We spent more time watching Olga cooked in her very own kitchen. As i recalled, it was a hand-on cooking class. From my experience, it wasn't hand-on. there was very limited participation and a lot of down time. This part of the class needs a lot of improvement. If you are looking for a real action in the kitchen. My recommendation is to look elsewhere.

By the way, there was no Turkish coffee or Turkish tea served during your dessert. I think it would be a nice touch to show the class how to prepare Turkish tea/coffee. It wouldn't add up to the cost. However, it would be quite memorable for the participants. Just a suggestion here.

The food we prepared was very basic in preparation and cost. I was hoping to learn something a little bit more advance. Yes, the menu could be elevated to make it worth 125 dollars/ person.

I did a walking tour with Culinary Backstreets on my 2nd and 3rd day of my trip. They absolutely blew my socks off. I felt like I actually unpaid for my tours at the exact same price.

By the way, I did a number of cooking classes in Paris and San Francisco. I think I have a pretty good idea what i can generally expect from this type of class.

Well, That was my experience with Delicious Istanbul. Hope you find it helpful.

Thank you for sharing your opinion about my cooking class. I would like to respond to your critique and clarify a few things. I am not sure why you expected a Turkish home. I am not Turkish and have lived in 5 other countries before moving here, and my house reflects that in a way. And still the house was designed and furnished by a Turk well before I moved there. So I hope your visit to my place gives you a chance to update your idea of a "Turkish home". My kitchen opens into a living room and is very spacious by the local standard. And by the way if you were to visit a traditional "Turkish home", then we could really talk small kitchen. You are right, I don't provide a cooking school experience, but you were wrong to expect it on the first place. I am a small one-woman operation with a different offering. I don't do any prep for you or set your stations beforehand. I focus on introducing you to the new ingredients and their use, to the way we build flavor in Turkish cooking, to the tips and tricks any experienced cook would appreciate and not at least - to the cultural context of the food and it's making. I am sorry, it was of little interest for you. At the classes we cook Turkish home food, the food that people eat every day. It might not be fancy, but it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to create such meals which I hoped to share with you and other cooking class participants. The knowledge and experience cost way more than the ingredients and ultimately define the price of the class. Also, you have compared the cooking class with your food walk experience by the highly esteemed provider. A cooking class and a food tour are not very comparable (like apples and oranges), and you could make such a comparison only if you had taken my food tour which you did not. I travel a few times a year and take cooking classes wherever I go. So I know there are many different styles of teaching, and I am always looking for a provider to match my needs and expectations. I am sorry you were not so successful in your research: everything I have written here is communicated through my website copy and the previous reviews. I have emailed you the recipes and apologize for the delay. With your friendly reminder it could have been solved in minutes.
