Quite impressive in the basement where the marble tombs of the emperor his wife and allegedly Michelangelo canvas can be seen. It was just my wife and myself as visitors and it felt like time travel.

I’m not convinced the mausoleum is really meant I be open to tourists but a guide on the gate lifted the metal panel to let me in, to see Menelik II’s tomb and a raft of other treasures. It’s all piled up like the place is used for storage.

Is it a genuine Michelangelo tucked away in the corner? I guess it could be, but it deserves safer protection and preservation.

Menelik II was a highly significant emperor in Ethiopian history. Under his leadership the Ethiopians defeated the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa in 1895. His namesake, Menelik I was the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and is believed by Ethiopians to have brought the Ark of the Covenant containing the Ten Commandments from Jerusalem to Axum (Ethiopia). Ethiopians believe it is still there. Inside, the artwork depicts important events in Ethiopian history. Unexpectedly, a group of giant tortoises reside in the immediate vicinity.

Been there a number of times to see the great history of Ethiopia. Many great leaders are buried there. Recently I attended the funeral of late President Girma Woldegiorgis, a great tribute to a great man. What an incredible venue and treasure for Ethiopia.

I tried to visit the mausoleum in an afternoon. At the entrance of the lane leading to the place, a guard told my driver that I could not carry a camera, but smart phone was allowed. I promised not to take any photos, but it did not convince him. He told me either to let the camera in the car or with him. Obviously those are not solutions to me, as my camera is brand new and has stored thousands of my precious photos. Finally I left the place without visiting.
My driver told me that last week other tourists were allowed to enter even with cameras.
I feel very puzzled because of this inconsistent policy. Why camera is not allowed but mobile phone is? If camera is not allowed, there should be proper lockers or facilities to store it, but not just giving it to the guard without any proof.
I also feel very disappointed that the tourist facilities are not keeping up with the increasing number of tourists. I have the impression that the government does not care much about tourists.

I have been on a few occasions but actually only entered the Mausoleum once during a Holy Day on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Calendar . It is a majestic space, worthy of the tomb it houses. During the week it is a beautiful, quite place where one can go to pray and meditate or simply have a few quite moments regardless of your religious persuasion. The adjacent churches are worth exploring as well as the entire complex houses some of the most significant places of worship in the Ethiopian Orthodox faith.

Timing of your visit is important. Dont still be there when they start a service as they are likely to lock you in for the duration. The tombs are intersting and some of the paintings excellent

It is the sanctuary of Emperor Menelik II. (1844-1913) as well as his wife and daughters, and other Ethiopian dignitaries. Menelik II, emperor of Abyssinia from 1889-1910 is credited with the countries modernization, such as trains, electricity, telephone, and other successes. Menelik ll. is considered the founder of Addis Ababa (translated 'new flower') in 1887 in the foothills of the Entoto mountains at about 2,400 m altitude. Addis Ababa became an important administrative centre not only for Ethiopia but for Africa as a whole, and is reportedly the 3rd-highest capital worldwide. The Mausoleum was inaugurated in 1920 by Empress Zewditu. Nowadays, the mausoleum serves also as a church and visitors can get access to the crypt with the marble tombs, paintings, and other artefacts in memory of the late Emperor. The building is surrounded by a beautiful garden with old trees and plants, and visitors find as well benches to seat and rest after the roughly 15 minutes’ walk from the main road via its quite steep foot path.
