We arrived at 9AM, passing the WW1 field gun and the large 2004 ebony Masai sculptures to the entry desk. The receptionist processed our card for 24,360 Tzs($10.43) for 2 adults and told us to take the steps upstairs. There we were greeted by a nice docent who offered a tour of the 5 lighted halls.
We spent the next hour perusing the well described exhibits; Neolithic settlement> 1000-1300 AD India trade route> Slave trade from Lake Tanganika> Sultan ruling of Zanzibar> Stanley-Livingston explorers> Special hall on African Rock Art> Photos of early leaders of Independent Tanzania> Tanzanian paintings> Hall dedicated to early man with large murals and finally prehistoric animal fossils with models.
The exit hallway showed photos of President Kennedy with President Nyerere & President Obama’s visit. Outside in the large courtyard was a multi century “Sacred fig tree, Memorial to the 1998 US Embassy bombing and a display of classic autos including a 1938 Rolls Royce imported by the British Governor.
Clean restrooms with limited water. Excellent gift shop.

My husband and I enjoyed the museum. The original building is currently empty. However, there are several artifacts and pictures throughout the rest of the museum. I suggest hiring a tour guide. My husband paid 15,000 TZS.

This museum covered a lot of ground including the earliest emergence of humankind and Chinese pottery! There were also sections on contemporary art including carvings, furniture and musical instruments. And there is a small section on rock art. I expected more information on how the Chinese helped and continue to help Tanzania economically.

My wife and I explored this museum in our afternoon in Dar es Salaam, and absolutely loved it. It was large and a good way to learn about the history of the county in Tanzania. I loved how it focused on the good and bad, and how much post colonization was discussed. I would go if you have time in the city.

There are some buildings in the plot that you need to see. The Tanzanian polical past, history of human materials found in Tanzania, etc. It is very organised and require a visit.

Mostly one for the history of the country (from its colonial time under the Germans then the British to the time of the early republic under the 1st president Julius Nyerere, all of which I learned quite easily by means of the "historic photos" on display), also to see at this museum are displays of archaeology (not just of Tanzania but of the African continent as a whole including 3 or 4 of these "huge paintings" nicely depicting scenes of life in the prehistoric time) and also art in the form of paintings & sculptures (not too many but a nice-sized collection I would say including one painting depicting President Nyerere with his generals in the war between Tanzania & Uganda). Then, there are also the outdoor & semi-outdoor displays of: an "iron dinosaur"; a number of "presidential cars" (including about two Rolls Royce's); some collection of items memorializing the bombings of the Tanzanian & Kenyan embassies in the 1990's (really quite a "moving tribute" to those who died that day as seen in newspaper articles & written memorials displayed in a small pavilion on the museum grounds); and also a group of these wooden poles or such with human & animal figures carved on them (all standing on a lawn of the museum grounds).

And kind of interestingly, the "original building" of this museum (when it was first opened in like the 1940's) seems to be the small one-storied building which still exists but is now just empty inside; and also there's one building all the way at the back of the museum grounds which was just pretty much empty at the time of my visit (but about the same size as the main building out front with those of history, archaeology & art as mentioned above).

And yes, also worthwhile visiting along with this museum is the tower with a "revolving restaurant" on its 21st floor for "pretty great" views of both the city & the sea (called Golden Jubilee at just about a 10-minute walk away by first turning right after leaving this museum then a left turn after about two blocks).

Situated in downtown Dar Es Salam, it is certainly worth visiting to learn about the discovery of fossils and human remains and to learn about some of the first human existence on earth.
Also recent history from independence ro the present day.
The memorial to the US Embassy bombing in the gardens of the museum are also a fitting tribute.
Highly recommended

Very interesting museum with several exhibitions. They have a short exhibition about the history of Tanzania and Dar-es-Salaam, mostly pictures and objects with short descriptions... but then you find a surprise: the lap-desk of Dr. David Livingstone. Hm, not bad! Next to this exhibition, there was another section about the early hominids found in Tanzania. This exhibition was totally new, with modern displays meeting the highest standards. They also have a short art exhibition. This museum is a must-see in Dar in my opinion.

This being the national museum of Tanzania, you would hope for a better kept building and displays. There are several sections with very interesting exhibits. Some of the displays are reproductions but they are interesting nonetheless. Some exhibits are just sad. The aquarium should just be removed.
