Unfortunately, the church was locked up when we visited, so we could only see the outside. Most dominant is the large clock on the bell tower of the church. Quite dramatic.

with its Arabic style clock tower. White washed and rather majestic seen from either side of river. Castle ruins a stone’s throw away and great pics of the Church from castle tower.

Built on the site of the former grand mosque, Santa Maria occupies one of Tavira's highest and loveliest plazas, a popular site for neighborhood dogwalking and gossip. The church itself lacks the "wow" factor of nextdoor Santiago, but current restoration work allows for a fascinating up-close look at conservators at work.

With 20+ churches, Tavira’s religious and spiritual needs are well supplied. This is one of the bigger churches and has the extra attraction of a bell tower you can climb and a very small but very good museum/art exhibition.
You can buy a single pass to see this and 2 others (Misericordia and Santa Maria do Castelo). For €7 you can get entry into all 3 including the bell tower and museum and an information brochure at each church. They are all within 2-3 min of each other and you can do them in any order. Just ask for the pass at the first church you go to.
The church was built in 13th century. Inside, you’ll find some beautiful panels of traditional Portugese blue and white azulejo tiles picturing biblical scenes like the Last Supper. It is also the place where Christian knights, killed by the Moors, were laid to rest. In the main chapel Dom Paio Peres Correia, a Grand-Master of the Military Order of Santiago and hero of the Reconquista is buried. Alongside him, 7 of his knights who died in the 1242 battles are also buried.
The bell tower with its over-sized clock face is a local landmark and is well worth the climb. The views are amazing but be warned, the steps are narrow and steep (although there is a metal hand rail). They are also covered in an inordinate amount of bird poo. I’m not sure what’s going on with the birds’ diets here but you really won’t be able to avoid treading in it.
Don’t overlook the tiny but excellent museum/gallery. I nearly missed the entry door behind the gift shop. It is very well set out and has clear labels and information. It also has the strangest paintings of baby Jesus, I've ever seen. It's a face only a mother could love - see photo.
NOTES:
* The entry door is around the back so check there before you assume the church is closed.
* Toilets are beside the bell tower stairs
* The Tavira castle ruins are directly opposite so you can see both at the same time.

The proce is very high and there is nothing more to see than what you can find in a free entrance church.
Inside the church there are several people asking for money or to buy things.
It was really bad. Until now it is by far my worst experience.
ARTgilão TAVIRA and Santa Casa da Misericórdia find a way to raise money from nothing and are exploring tourists and giving a bad name to the catholicism and the Tavira city.

It's a bit of a walk up to the church from the Praça da República to the church and the castle next to it. The church was locked on the Sunday I visited in June 2020, probably due to the Covid-19 emergency. The church was built in the 13th century on the site of a Moorish mosque.

This church is located in the parish of Santa Maria, and is the mother church of the city of Tavira. It is reported that this church was built in the 13th century, when the city of Tavira was conquered by the Moors under the initiative of the Order of Santiago into the year 1242, by D. Paio Peres Correia, to replace the Arab mosque there existing.
In the year 1960, the commission for the commemorations of the 4th centenary of the death of Infante D.Henrique set up a pattern next to the church that reads:
"In this city, after taking Ceuta, Infante D. Henrique received the title of Duke of Viseu and Lord of Covilhã".
