This beautiful church is more than worth a visit! The historical and artistic value is immense and there is so much to learn, there! Look at their website to see if a proper tour is available: you will not regret it :)

This magnificent Gothic church was started around the 11th century, but has had a number of additions, restorations and artistic additions over the centuries. It is located close to the small community of Basti Mondovi, in the Southern part of the Langhe, just a few miles Northeast of Carru. It was built on the tomb of San Fiorenzo, overlooking on of the main salt routes of the area. Bonifacio della Torre was the mecenas who contributed enormously to the expansion of this church. This single-nave chapel is notable because of the collection of well-preserved frescoes on all the available walls. They cover well over 1000 square feet, and date back to the 15th century. The frescoes represent the life and passion of Christ, as well as picturesque descriptions of heaven and hell.

We got lucky and were able to visit the inside of this church when we arrived at the same time as a bus full of older German tourists. The outside isn't special but the inside contains marvelous 15th-century frescoes with amazing details. The highlight is a large and grotesque Inferno scene but the more subdued hagiographic sections are lively and interesting in their own right---lots of grisly deaths and such. Absolutely worth booking a private tour in advance if you're not there for the public hours.

Near the doorway, there is a map of some humble local churches that are fun to find on the nearby country backroads. You won't find any of them on Trip Advisor so take a photo of the sign and happy hunting.

I've found it by chance on the Internet and I decided to give it a try. I called the number that was written on the site and the lady who answered sent his husband to open up the curch for us. We went there on Saturday at 15.30. The old man provided detailed info about the frescos in the church. It's been simply amazing. We enjoyed the explanation and we loved the curch itself. It's a hidden gem located just 20 minutes away from vicoforte and Mondovì. Go there and you won't regret it!

For those who enjoy Medieval painted churches, this is one of the best in northwestern Italy. Painted in the mid 15th-century by a variety of artists who practiced in the Italian and French Alpes-Maritime, this church depicts the life of Christ, the life and martyrdom of San Fiorenzo, Heavenly Jerusalem, and one of the most extraordinary views of Hell that I've ever seen, complete with body-chomping devils and demons. All of the walls are painted in a beautiful vernacular style and the preservation is exttaordinary. Open on Sundays from 3 to 6 PM, the local community provides very knowledgeable guides with speak Italian, French, and English. Can enjoyably be combined with visits to outstanding local vineyards known for their Barolos and other reds. Great, inexpensive food at local restaurants. For art tourists this is a must.

The trip to the church of san fiorenzo is definitely a must when visiting this part of Italy. Initially it looks like nothing special, a small community church next to a vin yard. We arrived mid morning and were disappointed to find the opening hours were for the evening only, however our luck changed when a group of Italian tourists informed us they had booked a tour and we could join them.
Inside is a completely different story. The frescos are the most important in piedmont and date back to 1472. They cover every surface and genuinely take your breath away upon entering.
There is no fee for visiting this chapel however they do expect a donation.
