Our Lady of Tinos (Greek: Παναγία Ευαγγελίστρια της Τήνου, "The All-Holy Bringer of Good News", and Μεγαλόχαρη της Τήνου is the major Marian shrine in Greece. It is located in the town of Tinos on the island of Tinos. The complex is built around a miraculous icon which according to tradition was found after the Virgin appeared to the nun Pelagia and revealed to her the place where the icon was buried. The icon is widely believed to be the source of numerous miracles. It is by now almost completely encased in silver, gold, and jewels, and is commonly referred to as the "Megalócharē" ("[She of] Great Grace") or simply the "Chárē Tēs" ("Her Grace"). By extension the church is often called the same, and is considered a protectress of seafarers and healer of the infirm. The icon was found on the very first days after the creation of the modern Greek State, henceforth Our Lady of Tinos was declared the patron saint of the Greek nation. The icon was at the time thought to be the handwork of St. Luke the Evangelist, a possibility that can neither be confirmed nor ruled out, and a nationwide fund collection was carried out for the building of a church to house it. The church was designed by the architect from Tinos, Efstratios Emmanuel Kalonaris in the Renaissance style and was inaugurated in 1830. Since then it constitutes the major Christian pilgrimage in Greece, equal to what is Lourdes in France or Fatima in Portugal. The church receives a vast number of donations in silver and gold votives each year; these are auctioned and used for charities. The church is officially dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The major feast of the church, however, is on 15 August when the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is commemorated by the Greek Orthodox Church, following the strong tradition of the Aegean Islands where the Dormition is grandly celebrated in mid-August as the principal summer feast. The second finding of the icon took place on December 18th 1842, according to the Old Church Orthodox calendar used by all of the Orthodox Church until 1924 in Greece, and still used by the minority who didn't join the New Calendarist schism, corresponding to 31st December in the current civil calendar used as the liturgical calendar by the New Calendarist schismatics.

Impressive church in several ways, the church celebrates the finding of a miraculous icon in 1823 which is believed to have curative properties, it attracts thousands of vistors and plgrims, some of who crawl up a specially laid cartpet from the harbour up the hill to the church. The church accounts for a large part of the people who vist the island throughout the year but especially on 15th August. There are large numbers of tourist shops and restaurants which cater to this business. Look out for the plethora of shops selling candles in varying sizes and plaques of various body parts that need to be cured!

Magnificent church of Orthodox Christian religion. Spectacular not only for its size, but also for the details of its ancient decoration.
It is said that miracles have taken place at this church. Sometimes you get to see people walking on their knees towards the entrance of the building as a symbolic religious act. That is the reason a red carpet has been installed in the outdoors area leading to the church entrance in order to protect people doing that, from hurting their knees.
Believers or not this a remarkable monument you can pay a visit to.

My husband and I boarded a ferry from Mykonos to Tinos at the invite of a friend and resident of this sweet little island.
Upon our arrival, he drove us to this incredible church and explained the significance the pilgrimage many people make to this island and how some crawl 800 meters (on hands and knees) up hill to the church front doors.
Although we visited in October (The day of pilgrimage is in August) there were many people who were crawling up the road on hands a knees.
The island installed a red carpet from the bottom of the road to the church , alongside the road, as a designated place of “sacrifice “ as they crawl.
The church itself is incredible with history and beautiful Architecture. as with any Greek Orthodox Church, women should not enter into the sanctuary with shorts or skirts or uncovered shoulders.
Even if a visitor is not religious, this is an incredible place to visit... as always, respect of the culture and religious practices is highly recommended.
Amazing experience ❤️🇬🇷
