Saw this whilst driving by and made a stop / took the tour. It was certainly interesting, especially the history of the asphalt used in places like Times Square and Piccadilly Circus. If you're brave enough, do try the asphalt coffee afterwards in the restaurant and make your own mind up (a hint: it apparently comprises coffee, absinthe, and liquid asphalt (tar). I'm certainly not going to give you my opinion but I dare you to try it.

Dear guest,
Thank you so much for your great review! We are thrilled to learn that you had interesting experience in the Asphalt Mines on your spontaneous stop.
We would like to reassure you: our "asphalt coffee" does not comprise liquid asphalt! It only has La Semeuse coffee and absinthe in, and it comes with a chocolate truffle of Jacot Chocolatier. We like our clients to come back to the Val-de-Travers and thus would not dare to have them drink asphalt!
We hope to welcome you back to the Val-de-Travers again soon!
Best wishes,
Odile Roulet

We went on the 90 minute guided tour and learnt all about asphalt! This mine, with about 100km of galleries, was the largest one in Europe until its production ceased in the 1980s. Our guide was bilingual French-German and explained everything competently in both languages. It was an informative visit and interesting. However, be aware there are some steep stairs and the temperature in the mine is a constant 8 to 9°C all year round. After the visit, you can also have a meal in the adjacent restaurant - the speciality being ham cooked in asphalt. We did not try it as we found the price too high at over fr 25.-.

Dear guest,
Thank you very much for your kind and detailed review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your experience with us. Thank you for highlighting the quality of the guided tour, I have passed on your praise to the staff members who were thrilled to receive such recognition.
We are sorry to learn that you found our menu too expensive. Unfortunately, however, we cannot offer lower prices because we buy premium Swiss ham from the local butcher and the cooking process takes about 4 hours and requires know-how and special care, which explains the price. We hope that you understand.
Thank you again for taking the time to recommend the Asphalt Mines on TripAdvisor. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!
Warmest regards,
Odile Roulet

One kilometer of the underground mines is open to the public. We've enjoyed every meter of the guided tour: We've learned how the detonation experts worked, how water was pumped out of the deep tunnels and how the asphalt was transported to the surface using horses. The last mine horse retired in 1975 - its work was taken over by electric locomotives till the mine was closed.
In the year 1711 asphalt deposits were discovered at La Presta in Val-de-Travers - until 1812 the asphalt found there was used only sparingly and mainly in the medical field. Industrial scale mining of asphalt began in 1873 and continued until 1986. Tunnels extending for 100 kilometers on several levels, were hewn into the rock for mining purpose. The asphalt was exported all over the world - even to New Zealand! So we've felt a little bit home.
The food in the restaurant of the museum was tasty: The bacon was cooked in asphalt .... Do not miss the souvenir shop and buy some Absinthe, the green fairy. Absinthe is traditionally bottled at a high level of alcohol by volume, but it is normally diluted with water prior to being consumed. If there is an ideal place to drink this spirit than it is the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel.

Make sure you dress warm or use one of the provided mine jackets as it is chilly inside.
A nice history lesson to learn how asphalt is made and where it goes to.
It is a guided tour in multiple languages so call to find out when so you can adjust your schedule to it and avoid unnecessary waiting.
You walk approx 1km inside the mountain and see different places and old equipment.

We enjoyed an excellent guided tour of the no longer working mine. The guide was very helpful and the explanations were very clear. Having been in mines before, this was deluxe as I could stand up in all the corridors.
There is also a restaurant and gift shop available on site.

what a story and how impressive it is to consider what these mountains gave to the industrial development. After this visit it is highly recommended to have a walk in the "Gorges de l'Areuse". Enjoy it

Bonjour,
Meilleures salutations,
Odile Roulet
