Observatory Hill Lookout on New Years Eve
4,0 dari 5 lingkaranDes 2024
New Years Eves, it’s advisable to stay in a hotel, if you can, expensive I know, but it’s well advised. On the eve of the fire work display we wondered up to somewhere called Observatory Hill lookout. It’s Free. The walk was easy with a slight incline at the end. Beautiful pathway leading to the top, amongst the morton bay fig trees. We got there really early. There was literally a handful of people there and we honestly got a prime spot. It was fantastic but being idiots, we forgot to bring sun shade . As the Sun beat down, you can imagine, we’re doing chase the shadows, anything to avoid it, we kept moving around with the shade of the trees. We ended up under a huge tree at one point that was amazing because there where beautiful bats that kept flying over our head, they were so big and they swooped down and got so close to us it’s like they weren’t scared at all. I got a little group of us talking about the bats and how large they were, it was decided they must be fruit bats. Then the conversation ventured into how big there droppings might be. This was too much, there’s always one. We decided to move a few feet down towards the fence and hedge row. Great shade to be had here, but not the best view point. Come 2pm, the look out field was getting really full. At 9pm they had a children’s fire work display, some of the crowd dispersed after the display, but it filled up again really quickly. Toilets be prepared for a queue, if you feel you need to go, go, don’t leave it until last minute. You could be in for a little accident, especially if you have children with you. Food, take it with you, they have a few stalls, but not many, so obviously more queue’s. At the 9pm display, people kept standing up spoiling it for everyone else. Well , old mum here, started a mini riot. 😂. I was shouting “SIT DOWN, SIT DOWN”. My daughter was mortified until she heard others joining in. I got ¼ of the field shouting. Everyone that was stood embarrassingly sat down. 😂. At the start of the midnight display they started to stand again. Guess who started a second mini riot. ME, and guess who got all the crowd going. ME. 😂. Oops. But it worked, everyone sat down, making it enjoyable for all. The display was incredible, quicker than I expected. But it was fantastic.

The Sydney Observatory is located on top of a small hill known as Observatory Hill. The hill is not that difficult to climb, though from the top, it seems like a huge drop down to the streets below.

The Observatory itself is a rather small one, with some old instruments displayed and one can spend around 15-20 minutes inside. Outside, however, there are some nice lawns with excellent views of the 'Coat-Hanger' (as the Harbour Bridge is called by locals) and the Darling Harbour too. There is also a bust of Hans Christian Anderson here.

We passed through here on an I'm Free Walking Tours tour of The Rocks (see my reviews "Where it all began" and "A bit rocky, but we made it!"). No time to tour the observatory, but we did get great views of Sydney Harbour Bridge (from the "back" side) and Sydney Harbour west of the bridge.

TIPS:

--Time your visit to end at sunset. Nice view over the harbor to the horizon.

This lofty hill situated between The Rocks and Barangaroo is rich in the history of Sydney, having for for a long time served many purposes. Since European settlement it has been the site of windmills (originally Windmill Hill), a fort (Fort Phillip) and then a signal station, taking advantage of its excellent view of the harbour from the bluff, an early colony hospital, a school site, and of course the location of Sydney Observatory. During this time the hill’s name again changed to Flagstaff Hill and then to Observatory Hill. The Observatory no longer functions as a site for astronomical observations (closed in 1982) and is now a museum. Entry to the Observatory grounds is free but access to the main section and a guided tour of the equipment cost $10 ($8 with a concession). The northern and western sides of the Observatory offer views of the city and harbour that are second-to-none, so is very popular with city workers as a lunch spot and with picnickers day and night. The Hill also contains an attractive rotunda and a Boer War memorial.

The views from Observatory Hill are lovely, with Harbour Bridge, North Sydney, and Harbour west of the bridge particularly prominant. Around sunset is a great time to visit.

I have to thank The Bachelor for this hidden gem. We wandered around via Darling Harbour from our hotel near China Town, on our way to The Rocks. It was a leisurely 2-3km walk, with a few stairs up to the observatory that get the heart rate up. Once there, we were delivered a unique perspective of The Rocks and Sydney Harbour Bridge, framed by the warm tones of the autumn trees. Throw in a towel or blanket and grab some takeaway from Barangaroo if you want to snack while you enjoy the view. The perfect vantage point.

Highest point in Sydney and home to the observatory it is well worth the effort to wander up here and enjoy or photograph the views. The band stand and cannon are worth a look and the fig trees are beautiful.

This is a great place to come to admire the view and take a few photos. It is just a short walk from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and you can get a nice view of the bridge from here. There are beautiful old fig trees here which provide plenty of shade. There is also a beautiful rotunda. This is a lovely place to come at any time of the day, but sunsets are particularly special.
