If you enjoy riding horses on a straight gravel road with telephone poles and utility vehicles then this is the tour for you. The guide was sweet and knowledgable about horses, but gave little or no information about the area. So much could have been said about the ranch, the lava fields, the horses…truly a waste of money

Great trail ride for a family of 4 including 2 young kids (3 and 5). We signed up for a private ride so the kids could ride their own horses, and it worked out great with the guide leading their horses on her own horse.
The horses were great and we learned a lot about life on the Big Island during the ride.
The only thing worth noting is that the location has moved versus what’s described in most of the reviews. They moved from Waimea to Waikoloa Village, so the ride is on a pretty straightforward trail (with some rolling hills) behind the village, but it’s not a wide-open meadow as described in some of the earlier reviews where you can just wander around.
It’s still pretty - you have a good view of 4 of the 5 volcanos and we saw wild goats and donkeys, but it’s not big, green rolling pastures.
Definitely recommend if that’s what you’re looking for!

My family scheduled a trail ride on November 26 for my daughter’s 9th birthday with 4d Quarter Horses Hawai’i in Waikōloa. During the ride we were instructed that we didn’t need to ride in a line and could ride side by side. About a quarter of the way through our ride one of the horses “Jalapeño” lunged over and full force bit my upper thigh. I am very thankful I was wearing jeans or it could have been much worse. Needless to say this ruined our ride, as well as the rest of our vacation for me since I couldn’t do many of the activities we had planned. I don’t feel that the company took the incident very seriously and I am very concerned for any children or inexperienced riders using this company. Please be very careful. Almost three weeks out you can still see the outline of the teeth marks in my leg with a large painful hematoma in the center of it. My doctor says the swelling will last up to six weeks and I could have scarring. If it doesn’t heal after the six weeks I will have to go see a general surgeon.

A wonderful family experience and the only horse riding/paniolo on the Big Island where my 4 year old could actively participate outside of a corral. The handler (I'm sorry I don't recall her name😕) was awesome with my kids, helping them feel confident, answering their endless questions, and guiding along the youngest. She was amazing and deserves huge thanks!
We rode along a good chunk of the ranch, marveling at the beauty of the green, hilly landscape with snow-covered Mauna Kea towering above everything. Our pace was generally walking with some trotting here and there, but this was perfect for beginners and children. My kids really enjoyed interacting with their horses, learning their names, etc. Overall, a great experience that they're already begging to go back to!

My partner and I enjoyed a gorgeous horseback ride with this ranch through sunny and scenic Waimea. Our guide was very experienced and attentive, and helped everyone navigate their horse comfortably. We spent two hours enjoying a scenic ride with views of ocean, nearby Mauna Kea, and the rolling ranch hills. Highly recommend this ranch!

This wasn't on our agenda when we arrived on the big island, but we're so glad that we found 4D Quarter Horses. We had the most beautiful, relaxing ride through the grazing hills. We lucked out in that it was just the 3 of us on the tour. We could not have been more satisfied. It's about an hour from Hilo and about 25 minutes from Waimea. Totally worth it.

Wonderful horseback riding in Hawaii! 4D Quarterhorses (Dehana ranch) is the real deal for an authentic working cattle ranch ride. Cowboys or cowgirls with plenty of aloha will take you on a cattle drive or roam miles of breathtaking open range with opportunities to trot and canter for more experienced riders. Definitely not a nose to tail ride. They accommodate beginners to experts with calm, well trained and lively horses. A must do for locals and visitors to Hawaii. This upcountry experience is a hidden gem of our island, highly recommended!

this is the only open-range "trail" ride i've been on that was truly open range. we had free roam, as long as we headed in the right direction.
vicki was amazing - very laid back and friendly, and made conversation with us the entire ride. i took my friend out on the advanced ride for her birthday as a gift, and we ended up being the only two out there! so we got lots of one-on-one attention.
the ranch property is gorgeous; during the rainier periods, there's a little gulch you ride the horses through that can, apparently, flow with fresh water. would have been lovely to ride through that! there are tons of open fields and hills to ride over, as well as running, trotting, and cantering opportunities. a special moment was returning back "home" for the horses, and riding through the field where all the other horses were grazing. three came up to inspect (and follow us) for a bit.

Wonderful Ride. Vicki our guide was great with my son who got a leg cramp an hour into our ride. Loved roaming the open fields and seeing the cattle. Horses are well loved.
