What a great museum. Really informative and self guided so no pressure. The staff are great and the demonstrations really bring the whole process to life. A great museum for all ages.

A real gem of a place

Brilliant museum and very welcoming and friendly staff as you would expect in Stoke-on-Trent. Spent a good few hours exploring and finished off with a couple of North Staffordshire oatcakes in the cafe. Not to be missed.

A brilliant museum, really worth a visit!
Jun 2021
This is a brilliant museum, with lovely people running it! It’s really informative, for social and industrial history, working women and children, plus of course the fascinating history of ceramics in the area. We came because we love the Throw Down TV programme filmed here, and I’m so glad we did, we stayed over three hours but it wasn’t really long enough but we were stopping here on our way to Yorkshire. There is some really talented and lovely people giving demonstrations, and we had a lovely lunch in the cafe, where the staff could not have been nicer. Any age would enjoy this and learn something new and meet really interesting and lovely people. Well worth the money.

Recommended visitor experience
Jun 2021 • Pasangan
I was amazed at the museum experience I had here. Very much recommended. Once inside you are transported back in time to see how pottery was produced and how those working in the industry must have suffered. Demonstrations were offered at the potters wheel, how intricate details were produced and decorated freehand.

fantastic and fascinating
Mei 2021
Absolutely fantastic afternoon spent at Gladstone Pottery Museum. It is packed full of historic and fascinating buildings, information and displays as well as live demonstrations that are superb to watch. This museum is a hidden gem that is has a friendly northern charm not spoilt by commercialisation. We loved being able to look around the bottle kilns, see the Doctor's House and going through the whole pottery making processes from start to finish. This was enhanced by the two friendly and interesting pottery crafts people who were working there on the day. The shop at the end had something for everyone and every price and was certainly not expensive. Sure, some of the video presentations could be updated a little not to mention the noisiest staircase in the universe, but actually they just added to the charm. A fascinating bonus was the extensive toilet museum with its video inside a sewer presented by a rat!
Seriously, if you're in the area....book a visit, it's well worth the money.

Great historical experience!

Really interesting museum, you can walk around at your own pace and read the info in each room, lots of history to learn about and pottery to see.

Despite covid restrictions (no "have a go" activities available), there were lots of demonstrations to see, and the artists were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We learnt a lot and enjoyed seeing the iconic bottle chimneys from the inside.

Visit to Gladstone Pottery Museum
Mei 2021 • Keluarga
After seeing the museum on the Pottery throw down we decided to visit. We were not disappointed. It’s not the biggest or slickest of museums but it is run by people with genuine love for the place. All the demonstrators were all very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. All made sure our granddaughter was included in the conversation and could see what they were doing. Loved chatting with Rita about her judging on the show. I would encourage anyone with a love for pottery to visit, marvel at the size of the coal fired kilns and take a journey back in time to how the potteries used to run.

Thank you very much for coming to visit us and for your lovely review and comments. Our demonstrators have really missed chatting to visitors while we were closed (and you're right, we do love working here!)

Superb museum with an insight into the past.Home to "The Great Pottery Throwdown".
Mei 2021
Due to Covid restrictions you need to ring and pre-book and pay for your your visit which we did. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Every building had doors open for good airflow. The exhibitions were very informative as were the short films. Again due to covid you can watch a pot being thrown on the potter's wheel but cannot have a go yourself until restrictions are lifted. There is also someone demonstrating slip casting and in another building a person making fabulous clay flowers, again you cannot have a go but can purchase air drying clay from the shop to model flowers, etc. at home. It's wonderful to be able to step inside the old bottle kilns, fantastic architectural features in themselves and see the stacked saggars, How marvellous to be able to produce saggars, fill them with wares, stack them to ceiling height and then brick the kiln door up and fire it up. Then when the kiln has cooled to remove all the saggars and their wares. Each task required great skill and would have taken years to master. The museum has a fascinating section on the history of the toilet, with a great variety on show, something we now take for granted. The cafe is open and the tables are well spaced out, a good selection of cakes and scones as well as baked potatoes etc. The shop has an eclectic mix of gifts, specialist books,(a lot of local interest) Anita Harris pottery, Foley Pottery, prints, posters and much more. So if you are looking for a gift with a difference it may be worth visiting the shop even if you don't go round the museum but you would be missing a fabulous opportunity to learn about Stoke's historic past. To see everything properly we would recommend at least 2 hours. So hurry up and book a tour.
