Spent 5 days on the water during the December 2021- New year transition. Camp greatly rustic and the best therapy to shake off the city fatigue. We were a big group on the river and we were in the capable hands of about four guides. On one of the days Adam the camp owner came to meet us on the river and guide boats navigate a section of the river that had rapids. The river was full and the level of water would go up everyday.
This is a trip I will always talk about.

I travelled with a group of families over the New Year trip 2021. Based on our experience we decided that it would be helpful for other travelers if there was a full detailed review on what to expect, what to pack etc. So I hope that you will find this helpful:
The river was in flood and flowing very fast so we had it very easy.
We arrived at Bushwhacked around 5pm in the evening and were immediately greeted and shown to our "glamping accommodation" for the night. The tents are set up in small groups 5 - 8 tents in a group. Our glamping tent had two single beds with linen, pillows and a small light in the tent. (Take bug spray and bed bug spray with you). The ablutions are shared, take your own soap, towels, and all amenities that you use. (Take extra loo paper too).
We had a briefing by our guide who we were introduced to as we arrived and the guides were very friendly and helpful. They made themselves known to us and really communicated everything very clearly albeit still lots of questions. After the briefing you take your own dishes for dinner. There is a bar where you can buy all types of drinks (cash bar). After you have eaten their is a communal wash up area where you wash your dishes.
After the briefing you are supplied with a 60 litre dry packing bag each. You do need to take heavy duty black bags with you to put inside the dry bag or another dry bag. Pack all your river things (take less than you think you need) into the bag. Take something with you to identify your bag from the others as they are all identical.
The next morning, we left camp after a light breakfast and set off on our two hour trip to the start of our river journey. We were transported in an ancient bus that much to our amazement got us to the destination. Take water / snacks along for the ride. You stop half way for a toilet break (which is in the middle of know where and no toilets).
We then continued to the starting point of our river journey, due to timing and other groups arriving, our group opted to have lunch before setting off on the river. After lunch, we packed our boats with our dry bags and we were also allocated some communal items such as cooler boxes, barrels etc. There is enough room to tie on a lot of things. Take extra stretchies to tie things onto your boats.
We followed our guide along the river and took it very easy, getting into the rhythm of things.
Our guide found a spot for us to camp that night and we all needed to help get the boats out the water and unpack. Everything is very much a group effort.
Packing things:
3 x long sleeve quick dry shirts - depending on your duration. This is based on 4 days on the river.
3 x shorts
Costume at least two
Big wide brimmed hat
sunglasses
Sun cream
Bug repellent
We took light weight chairs, stretches and a sun screen as a tent for protection. Everything was micro sized so light and easy to carry.
Light weight sleeping bag and pillow.
Remember there is no toilet so you have to find a spot to use. They supply you with a bag which contains toilet paper, brown bag, matches. I suggest making up your own bag so you don't have to share with other people - hygiene hygiene
They provide spade too.
Food was plentiful and excellent and they even catered for some peoples strange diets...
Keeping drinks cold - they have a cooler box which you can put a couple of drinks in at a time. You need to locate this cooler box and use it. Ask the guide.
They do carry water but we took our own water bottles which was nice and easy.
Whatever you want to drink you need to take with you. (cans only /no bottles)
Take your own snacks, as the days are long.
One big tip: Take a small cooler box (hard one) that can fit in some snacks and drinks for each day). Each boat should have one of these little cooler boxes.
If you take a "coleman" cooler box you can fit this on the boat and use this to sit on.
Each morning you are given a sachet which is electrolytes / rehydrate mixed into one.
Take mozzie spray - there are lots of mosquito's and fruit flies.
You need a headlight
Something warm for the evenings.
We would have a "river bath" with biodegradable soap just before dark and then put on dry clothes.
Take chairs and make sure you have shade.
Take cream for ichy bites and allergies.
You need lots of sun cream.
I don't recommend wearing contact lenses that need to go in and out daily as there is too much dust. So rather get prescription sunglasses.
Take eye drops.
We wore water shoes which were fantastic, you should also take some slops with you. We also used gloves which helped a lot.
You need a couple of towels. One to cover your legs while paddling and one to dry yourself with.
Everything gets very dirty,
This was a fabulous family holiday. rougher than we expected but also rewarding.
The stars each night were spectacular.

took a day trip on the river in canoes
A pleasant experience regarding the river
But the company I would not recommend
We were not even given a bottle of water on the canoe
No snacks nothing
It simply was canoe ride with nothing
on arrival at the campsite, it was deserted with nothing to buy
We had to ask for water
Having been all morning on the canoe in the heat with no water I found this dismal
The guide was pretty inexperienced but sweet
Not recommended

We stayed here for 7days. A staff member(who is also a guide) working on camp was extremely rude and unwelcoming to us from day 1. The bar was closed 24/7 which is sad if there is nothing to do on camp. I tried to talk to the owner about this but could not find him for the whole 7days we where there.

we were there before heritage day and had a wonderful experience.
We had a spot on the riverfront and plenty of birds to see
Checkin was handled expertly by Mea and she also took us out the neaxt day on a wonderful Orange river kajak tour.
All in all we will be back.

Camped here for a night with our group. The setting is lovely, especially the sites by the river. The bar is great fun with well priced drinks.
There is a dedicated laundry area which is useful and the bathrooms and showers were clean. The shower was fine, but not as private as some other campsites we have visited (no individual doors just a shower curtain) and could do with a few more hooks for hanging your stuff up.
Our campsite had a sink and power and a great fire pit. The resident dogs at the property are also very cute.
Can’t get a better location closer to the river!

We loved our four day trip on the Orange River, BUT
Our drinking water was stored in cans that are not suitable for water, so the water got contaminated by the second last day of our trip and we didn't have any drinking water on the last day. Also, we finished rafting by 13:00 and were supposed to be picked up by 14:00 (why can't they just let the bus be ready for the clients from earlier on already???) and the bus only arrived at 15:00. This means that we were sitting in 40 degree weather with NO WATER and no clue of when we will be picked up for two hours. And we had children with us. All of this is just a result of horrible planning and bad management by Bushwhacked.

I spent a couple of nights camping at this campsite. They have the most friendly staff, clean campsites, hot showers, electricity and a fully-stocked bar. The campsite was on the river. They have a jetty where you can fish from or have a glass of champagne while watching the sunset. The river is easy-accessible and is safe to swim in.
I've also done the 4-day rafting with them before and the guides were excellent, amazing food, we felt safe the way down. The river is rich in birdlife so take your binoculars with! Definitely worth a visit. This place is a hiddem gem!

Fiddler's Creek have all the amenities needed for a good camping holiday. Well kept campsites, clean bathrooms and a beautiful bar on the riverbank with a floating deck which allows for a nice swimming experience in the Orange River.
Many campsites have great shade but a few can do with a little less sun in the summer.
The owners and personnel are great.

We did a New Year's river trip with this company. Such a cool experience. I would recommend it to anyone. The guides were brilliant and they made really good food. We had good company around the campfire every night. It was a first time experience for us to sleep outside under the stars, and it was so worth it. We had excellent weather throughout the days. The paddling every day was relaxing. We made wonderful memories as a family. If you want to experience some real good adventure, visit Bushwhacked Outdoor Adventures. They also have very nice camping spots with hot showers and electricity.
