Honestly it's been 40 years since I hiked this so my review is probably not appropriate. But it is a lovely, challenging hike.

An excellent long walk with some difficult sections. A long down hill to start but once you get to the valley floor it is not flat underfoot like some guides suggest. Sensible shoes area must. It is easy to do it you self if you have a hire car. Go to the visitor centre when you get to the entrance, and you can book the boat out at the end and the connecting bus back to the carpark at the start (you get the second boat back that gets in first!)

This was a struggle for me from start to finish. My husband loved it, I just wept under my sunglasses and fell on my derrière loads of times. Our guide caught up with us the third time I had fallen and remained where I was, just crying. We were “spoken to” (the shame!) and threatened with the exit option of going back up, 3km we had already came and finding our own way back to the hotel.
So, on we pressed, into the valley of torture. It’s near impossible to extricate oneself from, if this leisure trip is found to be unsuitable. Some people in these reviews had an even worse time than me! I feel sorry for them. I hope they get some well deserved therapy.
At one point, I implored husband to go on without me and leave me to die behind a rock, but he wouldn’t, which wasn’t very nice of him.
I’ll remember that, so I can keep it to use in an argument with him at a later date.
I had to wear fashion trainers due to Tui’s minuscule luggage allowance, the stingy sods (Still, the plane would have been even lighter on the return journey, saving them on pricey air fuel if I had quietly expired behind a rock.
I’ve won this one, Tui).
Don’t do this. Wear proper walking boots or shoes or you’ll go for a proper burton on all the loose rocks that are on the ground EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, for 13 -18km (it’s a deceptively long 13km, seems like Samaria Gorge are subjective, but what do I know?).
It’s a beautiful place, but racing to get the ferry and looking at where my poor trotters were landing so I didn’t go over meant I couldn’t take my time over the natural beauty of the Gorge; it’s magnificent crevasse narrowing to the “flange”; that’s when you know you have nearly finished this never ending torture route.
If you are a bit of a fat, menopausal 50 year old woman like me, I say, maybe just go to the beach. I like the beach and the sea more than anything.
Walking the Samaria Gorge, well, let’s say that it isn’t for me. My husband liked it, but he is quite a strange man. He would give it 5 stars. I’ll have to have a think about him.

Fantastic gorge walk, very varied terrain but well maintained. Impressive rockfaces and exciting walking in the river bed and having to cross the river on stepping stones or wooden bridges, with a little wobble in places!
Trekking poles certainly help on the descent.
Several places to fill up with water and use the basic (squat) toilets.
So lovely to be able to swim in the sea and relax on the beach whilst waiting for the boat to transfer you to a town for the bus or taxi back.
The boat trip took 1.5 hours to Paleochora, but the views from the boat were great, with the sun setting and music playing it was a fantastic end to a brilliant day.
We spent 6 hours descending, with food stops. There is a choice of two cafes at the end of the gorge, then lots of tavernas, restaurants and bars, and a mini market when you get to the lower village of Agia Roumeli and beach.

The trek was very difficult for us. We are 69 and 70, active and have no medical issues, like a bad heart, breathing issues, etc. Just arthritis normal for our age . We rented walking poles for $6/pair from our guide Tomas and started the trek at 8am. There were 3 'checkpoints' along the way. One rest point we should leave at 9:15am, one that we needed to leave by 11:30, the last was 1:15pm. There was water along the way and toilets. We were behind by check point #1, and never caught up. We felt SO. rushed we could not appreciate the beautiful place we were in. There were lots of places we had to walk on rocks to cross fast flowing, but not deep, water . We felt very precarious and worried about slipping. Other sections had lots of loose rock on down slopes, very large rocks to climb over and without our poles we couldn't have finished this hike. We let lots of groups pass us as we struggled, always trying to hurry . We both fell twice but luckily didn't break any bones . In the end we were over an hour off the pace, but then we sat for over an hour at a cafe waiting for the boat. Had we known, we could have used that time in the gorge and appreciated the beauty. It would have been less stressful. But the hike would've been just as strenuous! Believe the guides when they say this hike is not suitable for everyone!

A great challenging hike with beautiful scenery, but prepare for tired legs the day after. We started the trail at 10:30am taking many short stops for photos, snacks and to admire the views. We finally finished the walk 6 hours later at 4:30pm which gave us an hour before the ferry departed from Agia Roumeli to Sougia. The ferry took an hour to Sougia and another hour on the bus to get back to Samaria Gorge Car Park. We left our hotel around 8:30am, driving 2 hours from Rethymno and didn't return til 9:30pm, making it a very long tiring day but worth it. Most of the route was easy to follow and either on an incline or decline so prepare for uneven rocky surfaces, wear sturdy shoes with a good grip.

Entry to the National Park was 5 Euros per Adult.
Ferry 13 Euros (Look out for the Name: Samaria if travelling to Sougia)
Bus 4.80 Euros (Sougia - Samaria Gorge Car Park)

Next Time (yes I will 100% do it again) I will aim to start the hike around 8am. Starting at 10:30am was definitely too late unless you are a trail jogger or constant walker. When we got down into the Gorge the sun was going, we felt rushed and were clock watching worried about making the ferry. There is only ONE ferry a day out of the small town Agia Roumeli, no other means of transport unless you want to stay the night.

Hopefully this helps you plan your hike and have fun :)

Really lovely gentle ramble downhill with some fun rock hopping on the way and stunning scenery all they way down. Super trip well worth booking. Wear boots though - your feet will thank you.

Two women aged 55 and 52 with limited hiking experience.
We did a lot of research and read lots of reviews before the hike. Nothing could prepare us for the downhill hike (about 4 KLM’s) at the start then the boulders and water crossings. But wow - what a beautiful and challenging trek.
We thought we were well prepared with hiking shoes, walking poles and doing Milo’s and Imbros gorge before attempting this one.
It was absolutely fabulous and worth every step over the slippery rocks and uneven ground.
Recommend using a tour for the sake of a few extra dollars. Hotel pickup and drop off rather than trying to scramble for a seat on the Ktel bus.
Be prepared for the winding and steep roads on the bus ride back to Chania old town.
You won’t regret doing this once in a lifetime hike!
We are still sore 2 days later but nothing beer and wine can’t fix.

A long hike but worth it. Take plenty of snacks. Would be easier with walking boots and hiking poles but not essential if you have no mobility problems. A little uneven underfoot at some places but not too challenging. The biggest challenge is the length of the hike.

We don't regret doing it, but it was very difficult and we wouldn't do it again. The fact we did it is an amazing accomplishment, but it was not a pleasant experience.
We booked a hotel tour that picked us up at 6am and dropped us off at 7.45am to start the walk. We had a timeline from them, and even though we picked our own careful pace, with almost no stops, they kept rushing us and adding stress to the experience.
The rocks are slippery, (hiking boots will help with grip and ankle support) we only had trainers with us so had to be extra careful and couldn't look around much. We still did lots of quick photos, had plenty of water from the springs on the way, weather was very good as no rain and not too hot, but the rocks are everywhere and make the walk down really hard.
We are both in our late 30s and admire much older people who were at the trail, as it is so challenging on your knees and ankles.
One of the other reviews mentions muscle aches for a few days, which apparently gets much better with an easy day of swimming the next day, but still remember this is long and exhausting, and pack lots of food for energy on the way. There is a bus that will take you the last couple of kilometres after the trail that our travel company didn't tell us about. There is a beach at the end, not a sand beach though, so we recommend swim ware and water shoes for the beach, and a lovely cooling sea to dip into after an exhausting hike is so worth it! There was also a ferry ride back which was very pleasant indeed.
Overall gorge is stunning, but hike is horrendous and beach at the end is the highlight!
