When we visited we were unable to enter as mass was being held. Inside the church though is the hovel where St. Francis is believed to have lived and wrote his “Form of Life”
In 1853, the original church was destroyed in an earthquake and the present day building was constructed.

This is a steep walk from Assisi, but worth it. This is the location of the first Franciscan community. It houses the room and dining table used by St Clare, a chapel, and other historic artifacts.
Before you make the walk check the hours. Since this is an active community they only are open at certain times

A wonderful experience

We have been to Assisi many times but first time to Santuario di Rivotorto. Such a powerful experience, in the stone shelter where Francesco gathered the first of the brothers. To sit where they would have sheltered and prayed.. was so special. Outside high above the doorway is a magnificent painting of the vision of Francis on the chariot. After midday the sun catches the gold and it is magnificent.....

this one-now - ;
there is a long silence, a solitude, what a peace .. -

Here one feels the freshness of the Fransiscans.

Here one feels the freshness of the Fransiscans. In this church are the first stable-sheds where the first franciscans prayed and came together and healed the sick and weary. Visit the nearby WW2 gravefield hereafter. Ponder about our freedom.

In the footsteps of St. Francis

As the name suggests this church was built upon the hovels in which St. Francis and his followers lived. A very interesting visit. The church is well looked after bythe Franciscan Friars.

The Sacred Hovel of St Francis of Assisi
Okt 2016 • Teman
We stopped at the Sacre Tugurio Church or Santa Maria di Rivotorto (destroyed in an earthquake in 1853 and rebuilt in 1926) where the Franciscan order was said to have begun. Inside the church is the Santuario di Rivotorto, a Sacred Hovel, the first of two houses where St Francis and his ‘brothers’ found shelter around 1208. Rivotorto, meaning crooked stream, takes its name from the stream at the base of Mount Subasio that runs near the left side of this church and hovel comes from the word Tugurio. The Sacre Tugurio Church was built around St Francis' original tiny stone hovel in order to preserve the humble cottage. This simple stone cottage, that housed about 12 followers, symbolizes the spiritual poverty embraced by St Francis. The large church, dimly lit with limited daylight pouring through the stained glass windows above the altar, allows one to focus less on the large church but more on the humble beginnings of St Francis. The fact that this simple, tiny stone ‘hovel’ is located inside this much newer church, by contrast, shows the simple and poor ways in which Francis and his early friars lived.

A but far app 5kms. 4 from Assisi railway station. Linea C bus available. But very few services. We walked. Old cathedral is nestled in the new one. Very important for St Francis lovers. Nice view of Assisi. Good farms.

Rivotorto
Mei 2015 • Sendiri
A moderate sized church built around two very small rooms that show the way St. Francis and his early followers lived while he beginning his time as a servant of God. It is here that he wrote things that stated the importance of simplicity, poverty, and prayer.
I got more feeling of his life here than in the ornate Porziuncola of Saint Maria of the Angels. These two Rivotorto (winding river) building are simple stone. The Porziuncola is decorated with circa 1500 paintings and a 1700 steeple, which while very colorful and lovely, do not seem to me to express anything about the what the Saint preached in the 1200s. (Just my opinion).

A short walk away is a cemetery for UK service men killed here during WWII with touching remarks in stone from families of the deceased.
