Stunningly beautiful location. Soft white sand beach, turquoise waters. The spotted boat ride out is BUMPY! We took ginger travel sickness tablets before leaving and were just fine. It’s a relatively long trip out also- took about 90 minutes at full speed. The day we went was very busy- the island had been closed for 3 days due to weather so there were A LOT of boats all heading out. Of you’re patient and open minded that other cultures in crowds are different to yours then it’s all good. The reef was beautiful and our guide was super helpful- took the GoPro and filmed the kids and I swimming and diving so we could just enjoy. Admittedly, the crowds in the water were a little crazy, might be off putting for some. Lunch provided was great. Not much vegetarian food but if it’s needed let them know before you go and they’ll cater for you. Snorkel and mask included but not flippers- but flippers could be hired for a small fee (20 ringgit from memory). Such a gorgeous spot, worth the day trip out in my opinion.

If you have snorkelled in the Pacific Islands & the Great Barrier Reef, then you will be utterly disappointed, as we were. I should have read the reviewer from Singapore. The coral is dead, there are some fish & in some spots you will see some shades of purple & orange/red. Please, if you know about coral reefs & the animal life living there, save your money & spend it snorkelling during your next trip to the Pacific Islands or the Great Barrier Reef.

Took a day tour with Borneo Adventures (well organised and with friendly staff)
The one hour boat ride was very rough, many people got sea sick..,
Snorkeling so so..,
Lunch simple but ok.
Great views but the place full of Chinese and Korean turists taking selfie and being very loud...

We booked this tour with Amazing Borneo. Booking was smooth, organization was good.
You have to know that Mengalum island is a very popular destination for tourists in Kota Kinabalu, so it can be a bit crowded. Since the reef circles around pretty much the entire island though, the boats can spread and the actual snorkeling won´t be crowded at all.
We went to two different snorkeling spots. The first one was a mix of hard and soft corals, ample fish life, colorful and absolutely amazing to look at. We could have stayed there all afternoon.
The second spot was almost exclusively hard coral, and just as magical, if in its own way. The fish there hid among the corals and only poked their noses if you remained quite still.
The snorkeling was one of the best we´ve ever done. Truly amazing underwater world.
Mengalum island is a true paradise. The hues of blue weaving through the ocean, looked upon from a beach with the purest, fine white sand, is just amazing. We could have stared at it all day. You can go into the water from the beach, and you might even see sting rays (warning signs on the beach alert to their potential presence). Do be careful when you tread in the water, as sting rays often lie down on and partially IN the sand. We suggest you wear water shoes.
The food we had on the island was nice enough.
The passage is done in speedboats, but fair warning: Our trips there and back of about an hour each were bumpy and hard. Keep that in mind. Do bring your own fins if you can, otherwise you will be charged extra if you want to rent them. And they are pretty useful as the two snorkeling spots had quite the strong currents. But we don´t know if that is always the case.

Tip: We only found out we could have stayed overnight on the island when we were already there, and unfortunately it was our last day in Kota Kinabalu, otherwise we´d have stayed. We suggest you DO stay a night or two, and enjoy this beautiful island once all the day tourists are gone. The island itself and the beach are equipped with quite a few extras: swings standing partways in the sea, nice decorations for pictures, hammocks to chill in and so on.
Truly a place to leave all one´s cares behind!
Just look at the drone pictures, as a picture says more than words ever could.

I'm writing this review mainly in reply to previous review - Beautiful Island Ruined....
When planning our holiday to Borneo our agent included the day trip to Mengalum Island for snorkelling. I checked it on trip advisor and was very dismayed to read ThisFatOysterWorld's review - almost cancelled it.
We've now just returned from our holiday, and so pleased we didn't cancel Mengalum Island.
Yes - all the visitors on our day were Asian - Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Japanese. My husband and I were the only non- asians. But the staff made sure we were looked after - on signing in we were personally introduced to staff member Leon who spoke English fluently (as did all the tourism industry workers we encountered during our holiday). He made it his business to ensure we knew what was going on and that we were happy. Whenever an announcement or instruction was given, there was always a staff member to translate (without being asked). At lunch, they took care to seat us with other visitors who also spoke English fluently. On our return the land staff sought us out, checked that we had enjoyed ourselves and made sure we had transport back to town.
The boat trip was an adventure - but do take your seasick pills.
The snorkelling was fine. Lunch was delicious. Take your insect repellant.
The facilities were a little dirty and rundown - but hey! its an island more than 1 hour off the coast, what can you expect - added to the adventure really.
We had lovely discussions with many of the other island visitors about their countries, and what brought them to Borneo.
All in all we had a lovely day, a new experience and more lovely memories of our time in Borneo.

We visited in mid December 2017. We showed up at the jetty and was given chinese forms to sign, we asked for English as we couldn't read chinese. The boat guys said they only got chinese tourists visit hence only chinese forms. That gives you a hint about the number of chinese tourists that go there. I never really understood when I've heard of people complain about how the chinese behave when they travel until this day. I was appalled when I saw the following happen on the island during my trip:

- While I was in the ladies on the island, I saw chinese women stick their used pads to the wall, as their way of trashing them (you wouldn't believe this, until you see it for yourself)

- During one of our snorkeling spots, we saw a chinese man come up the boat with a live giant clam about half a meter wide, he proceeded to pass the poor clam around so his friends could take a photo with it. After passing around to about 15 people, he takes the clam back, leans over the boat and drops it back into the ocean.

- they are incredibly rude, while we were trying to get back on the boat from snorkeling, we decided to go up the boat ladder before everyone else started to climb up. While I took my fins off and got ready to climb up, out of no where, 3 chinese girls came up behind me, pushed me out of the way while proceeding to get on themselves. Mind you, they all had life jackets on, while I didn't because I can swim. But wished I had put them on if I had known there would be chinese women pushing me towards the boat motor!

Now, about the island itself. The boat journey one way took about 1.5 hrs, plus it was extremely rocky, for people who love rollercoasters like myself, this was a ride but for most it was terrifying. The 3 hr roundtrip boat ride, was not worth it at all, as all the coral we saw were dead, not surprising considering how the truck loads of chinese tourists treat them. We saw so many of them stepping on coral. We hardly saw any fish during snorkeling. The water though from the beach was a nice shade of cyan blue. That being said, we didn't have a pleasant experience there and would never go back again. It's really sad how the island is being trashed by tourists. It was a depressing experience.

This beautiful island an hour away from KK is a real beauty. Although only an hour away, the boat ride can get extremely bumpy and makes it very easy for one to get nauseous and sick (even when taking anti-nausea pills). Once there though, it's tranquil and peaceful environment is immediately present. It's beaches are amazing, and the snorkeling is fantastic with hordes of fish of many different species. Corals are abundant in certain areas, though the number of broken and damaged specimens is remarkable. The island itself is also much less hectic and crowded than most other touristy islands. This island, surely being one of the better of Malaysia's offerings, is definitely high on my recommendation list.

Mengalum is around an hour boat-ride from main island of Kota Kinabalu (take the anti-nausea pill!) the view is spectacular. The only con would be the Mosquitos under the shade so make sure you have the mozzie repellent with you!

One of the newly opened island resort near KK.

Good:
1. Snorkelling & scenery is excellent
2. There are blue tears on the beach at night

Bad:
1. No mobile signal (can be a good thing!)
2. Limited electricity & wifi access
3. Limited food options
