My wife and I were vacationing in the Trieste area and visited this castle, based on our internet research.

We really enjoyed our time at the castle. The castle and its gardens are beautiful. The views of the Adriatic Sea are amazing, especially if you walk up the tower.

The WWII bunker, built by the Germans and later used by the British, are interesting and historic - something to see.

Highly recommended!

This 14th century castle is well worth a visit. Not far from Trieste, Duino Castle is perched on a cliff with spectacular views of the Gulf of Trieste. A pretty formal garden adds to the pleasant ambience of the place. One can see various rooms, numerous old musical instruments, and historic photos and documents relating to the Princely family of Thurn und Taxis who own the castle.

The inside of Duino couldn't really impress us but we enjoyed the nice walk thru the gardens with amazing vies over the coastline. A place of history with good stories about famous people like Sigmund Freud or Rainer Maria Rilke. Also the WWII bunkers made a good contrast to the picturesque Castle.

Duino is a small town with 2 castles in front of the mediterranean see. The oldest has a bad path to reach the ruins, but it is complitely safe.Below it there's the rock of Dama Bianca, that look incredible from the see, asher own fantastic history. Inside the new castle ther´s a museum of historic art. If you are looking for a special wedding location, you can hire it to celebrate your wonderfull moments. The bunker is something incredible that take you back to the first and second world wars. I really enjoied the expirience.

We decided to visit the Old and the New Castle. Paid entry to both sites. When we came to the old castle which is a short walk distance we had to discover it was closed. no Information at all about opening hours. (we were there at 2pm!!!) Back in the office the girl was very unfriendly and was not doing anything, no attempt to apologize or give the money back. Our advice - don’t pay extra money for the old castle. And for this unprofessional behaviout - worst rating

15 min past our other stop at Miramar, we stopped in to see the Duino Castle and maybe walk the path. There was a sign for parking where I only saw like 6 spaces, but I didn’t realize the parking road made a loop and there was tons of parking along the street. As it was we parallel parked right in front of a shop near the castle so we found a good space too. It was about 11:45 am.

We saw people walking down the steep hill so thought that was were the castle was. Totally missed the fact we had parked about 20 feet from the castle arch and entrance. A bus kind of blocked our view so we walked down the hill to a small footpath following the signs to the Duino castle. What we didn’t realize as we paid a man on the side of the path 3 E each was this was the ancient site of the castle and they were ruins! Very few people there. Amazing to walk through and see the views. We looked back at the “newer” castle high up on the cliff to our left. So we accidentally found this castle but it was wonderful!

So we walked back up the hill and got a discount of one Euro each on the newer castle and didn’t have much time left. We walked around some of the amazing gardens and statuary and really didn’t even get to go into the castle. It is beautiful. Sorry we didn’t have more time.

Ordered hot sandwiches to go from the nice cafe there. Enjoyed our Duino visit! Leave yourself plenty of time to visit!

I recommend visiting this place, it has excellent views of the old castle, endless sea and surrounding bay. The garden is small but beautiful. The place has very peaceful athmosphere and calming effect.

We decided to drive from Slovenia to the Trieste area in Italy. Very good decision👍😊. The drive was easy going and after less than 2 hours (from Nomenj) we were in a beautiful village, having a croissant and coffee, and after we went in the castle. Breathtaking. The place itself and especially the amazing view to every direction!!!! The shore line is heavenly beautiful. Toured in the castle and went all the way up the tower. Will remember that forever.

Castello di Duino (Duino Castle is a fourteenth-century fortification located In Duino (Duino-Aurisina municipality) near Trieste, Italy, on the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Trieste. With its impressive gardens, magnificent view of the Gulf of Trieste, and so much to see and enjoy within its walls, this castle is worth seeing. The old castle can be seen from afar and is in ruins. The newer castle dates back to 1389 and is the private residence of Princess della Torre e Tasso; however it is open to the public. We did not bump into the Princess but I did bump into one of the many statues. Ouch
