First off, we've learned since taking the guided tour that the word "hike" as we understand it in the USA isn't something that translates to Norwegian. So what they call a "walk" isn't what we'd call a walk. Our guide was excellent and safety was always her main focus. Because the glacier has been receding rapidly over the past few decades, the first hour is a short boat ride and then hike over the rocks to get to the base of the glacier. Best to be in at least moderate physical and cardiovascular shape. The hike up the glacier is w/ crampons and ice axe all while roped to nine of your new best friends who will keep you from sliding into any crevasse should one misstep as at least one guy from Germany did. That certainly got our attention. All told, this was an amazing experience. And frightening. All at the same time. We'll never forget it and will talk about it for the rest of our lives.

Did the special blue hike. Guide was Nepalese who worked the season in Norway and then returned to guide at Mount Everest so definitely in safe hands! Hike was amazing, guide very knowledgeable and helpful. Excellent value for money, would thoroughly recommend!

If you are able, you should definitely add this to your itinerary. We are not hikers, but had no real trouble keeping up - the pace was comfortable and the there are stops for taking photos.
We had ideal weather and I was happy without a jacket.

We did a Long Blue Ice Hike on Nigardsbreen Glacier and it was absolutely magnificent. This is a must do, particularly if you've never been on a glacier!

Exceptional hike to the glacier. We did not book a tour and took the local bus from Sogndal, the driver was super helpful. The boat across the lake runs regularly throughout the day until 1700. The visitors centre is also worth a visit for the views and information.

We have our slightly older dog with us so knew we wouldn’t be able to do any of the guided tours, which look amazing.
We went through the toll booth just past the visitor centre (NOK

Absolutely amazing experience and it is a must if you are in the area.
But be careful! Read the reviews for the booking company before booking a trip. Some of the companies have a complete lack of safety which makes the trip potentially fatal. So please do yourself the favour of reading the reviews (especially the bad ones because they tell you how the companies handle emergencies) before booking a tour.
But with the right guide the trip is an incredible experience and truly a must.

We’ve done a hike on the glacier and it’s been amazing. Getting there from our accommodation in Hafslo was quick and comfortable as buses are very organised. So wherever you stay have no worries! You will get to the glacier anyway. The tour was indeed amazing, the guides were nice, friendly and helpful. Moreover you can go hiking on glacier even with kids as we did!

It would be possible to go to the foot of Nigardsbreen on December by your own? Some company who do trekking or something like this on winter there?

Stayed in an Airbnb over in the next valley, which turns out this glacier flows over to, but was able to take a 10 minute drive to the lot where you meet up with the boat. We had a great guide and it was only a group of 6 of us. We were one of the first groups to ascend the glacier, on purpose, and each step was a wonderfully magical experience. My 12 year old daughter and I used Jostedalen Breførarlag to go up and they were wonderful. Our guide has a master's decree in glaciology. We learned so much and it made the experience all the more enchanting. I'll always remember time spent on the glacier. Also, do the long climb/hike. You go further up the glacier and it's not that much more strenuous.

Would it be feasible to drive from Bergen (setting off at 10am) to Nigardsbreen and also complete the hike to the Glacier all in the same day?
I am traveling with 2 kids, aged 8 and 11.
Appreciate your replies!

It would be possible but it would be a REALLY long day. Its is over 5 hours of driving each way from Bergen, and that is without stopping to see the multiple beautiful sights along the way.
You'd drive by the Naeroyfjord and Aurlandsfjord and those places are some the most beautiful spots on earth. I think it would be smarter to drive from Bergen to Gudvangen, take the car ferry through the Naeroyfjord to Kaupanger, then spend the night in Gaupne.
Get up the next morning and hike Nigardsbreen then drive back to Bergenvia Flam so you can see the Aurlandsfjord from the Stegastien Veiwpoint before going back to Bergen.
Also the Dale of Norway factory and outlet store in Dale is worth a stop if you want to get a Norwegian sweater.

Is it possible to do this hike on your own in November?

Just getting to the foot of the glacier is a challenge because of the rough terrain. If there is any snow cover it would be dangerous.
Also, there may be no one else there so if by "alone" you mean just yourself then I would caution you. Lots of people get injured and have to be hauled down.

Can you please tell me what company this is with. We are going in August and there seem to be mixed reviews about some guides but yours sound good.

Great to know about your experience! I can feel your joy in your words... :) Can you please suggest where and how can I book this hiking tour for Nigardsbreen glacier? I intend to travel in the first week of May.

Hi,
My concern is that I don't know driving, and hence cannot rent a car to see the beautiful Norway!
I am planning my solo trip around mid May, and I am thinking to choose my accommodation near Luster.
I would be grateful if someone can guide me about the public transport to reach back and forth to hike the amazing Nigardsbreen glacier. I welcome suggestions for budget friendly hostels, etc. in the near by areas. Also, where can I do advance booking for my hiking tour for Nigardsbreen glacier?
