Ballycroy National Park is thrilling in its silent grandeur. Felt very privileged to be there and the excellent visitor centre was a huge bonus helping us to understand what we were seeing and imagine its history.

We had a nature walk given by the amazing Fintan! He was so much fun, with incredible knowledge of the area and unbridled enthusiasm. The walk was lovely, with a light wind and no rain. The view at the top of the walk, was spectacular. The visitor center itself, was built with the environment in mind. And the items for sale inside, were of local origin. Some good information about the park was available so it was well worth the visit.

Did the shortest walk around, lovely views. Will probably be back to do the longer walks. Staff were friendly and helpful. Didn't like the size and shape of the building not sympathetic to the landscape

We visited the centre last week - family of five including three children ages 11yrs, 9yrs and 5yrs.
Very warm welcome as we came through the door from the lady on the front desk. She have us a full run down of the facilities and pointed out what to look for.
Displays were very interesting and informative. My girls enjoyed seeing the animals and doing the hands on exhibits. I have been visiting the area my entire life as I have family in Erris and it gave me a new appreciation for the bogs and flora and fauna of the area.
However, the person who tipped this to a five star review was Michael who was stationed near the dipping ponds outside. It was a soft day but we decided to head out to do the walk anyway. We stopped at the dipping ponds at the start of the walk and Michael called us over to his building to learn more about the wildlife in the area. He was brilliant, very informative, gave a really good explanation of how the bogs form and the importance of them. We saw all sorts of weird and wonderful things - all of which were fully explained in a way we could all understand. Then he took the three girls out to the ponds to do some pond dipping and helped them identify what they'd got.
His enthusiasm, knowledge and general friendly personality was a big hit with us all and elevated our visit from interesting to memorable. Thank you for taking the time with us Michael.
The walk around the centre was beautiful although think definitely benefits from dry weather. Worth doing though definitely! Lovely cafe with delicious food at the end a huge benefit!
Please visit, it's worth it!

Hike up to the top of Nephin Beg and back down, 6 hours, 650m elevation, the views are stunning. The most remote and barren place in Ireland. We never saw one person the entire day.

This place is stunning. It took my breath away when I drove into it. And a hidden secret. No one has ever mentioned this place to me before and there was barely anyone there. I parked up and took the well marked up 5km walk, what a lovely walk. There are properly sign posted walks for all levels and capabilities from 2.5km to 40km.
This National Park is free to enter. You will need to bring whatever food and drinks you need when you are in the park as there is no where to buy any of these. There is a visitors centre a few kilometres away with a great cafe, but when your walking this is not close by.

Set in a majestic corner of Ireland is a beautiful designed visitor’s centre offering a history and display center catering to Adults and children alike. The building includes the Ginger and Wild coffee shop.
The layout also includes some walks which cover the serious walkers and the gentle strollers. Signage provides plenty of information on the flora and fauna. The views are magnificent, so don’t forget the camera.

Well worth a visit here with young children. Lot to things to see, do and learn about the wildlife in the park. There's also a nice looped walk around the center, staff were also very friendly and helpful.

We are a family of four . Two teenagers . Amazing location and the drive to it is spectacular. We met a lovely gent in reception . His welcome was so warm and friendly . He spoke to us in Irish and English so the kids enjoyed it and got to practice their Irish . They have a free exhibition and it was very informative and interesting . Lots of trails to do in the park all mapped out . Lovely coffee shop upstairs serving soup sandwiches tea coffee and pastries . Highly recommend for an educational trip

Pretty much ... the trail / board walk, about 1km, may be an issue. Everything in and around the building should be fine.

Are dogs allowed on walks?

My understanding is, as noted by others, that dogs on leash are fine. No signs saying otherwise. Also, we met a village dog named "Fluffy" on the walk - by himself. An employee at the visitor's center says that Fluffy lives in the village and regularly walks the trail. Very cute and very friendly, he immediately rolled on his back to have his stomach rubbed. So if you go, keep an eye out for Fluffy :)

Yes, as it's just off the main road, there is no access gate as such to pass through, which makes it all the wilder & more interesting! Enjoy!
do irish national park visitor centers have "passport stamps" similar to the u.s. program on visiting
parks where a stamp commemorates our visit?

I don'the think so but they probably could do some identification for you. Do get there and you will get a warm welcome which I am sure will fit into your schedule of memories.

Hi everybody. Is there public transportation to Ballycroy National Park from Westport and back in one day? Kind Regards, Lorena

Hi Lorena, you can probably get a bus to Ballycroy Post Office and walk to the park from there but it would take at least 2 hours each way and I don't think that there would be too many buses in a day. The best thing to do would be to go to the Bus Eireann website and send an email enquiry. Hope this helps. Regards, Helen.
