Black Crosses
Okt 2019
Our tour guide included this cemetery on our visit to the Normandy area. Entrance is made through a stone door which will allow only one person at a time to enter. We were told that the designer wanted to remind those who came that death was a solitary event. There are grave markers on the ground, but the black crosses are not markers.
Each grave holds two fallen comrads, head to head. There is a large monument to the 900 or so, fallen German soldiers burried here. Most were very young.

Also Germany lost many young lives.....many hated the war. Here you hear the story of the soldiers and also where they fighted on D Day.

A somber location
Agt 2019
The open spaces are high-lighted but a small row of crosses - then you appreciate the marker stones set into the ground - and rising above them all, the tumulus and monument. A sad, but reflective site

Venerable place

The American war cemetary above Omaha beach is a must for Normandy landing visitors. Rightly so - it's emblematic and the white crosses have become a well known symbol for the price payed for freedom.
But of course, there are many other war cemeteries in Normandy and the German cemetary in La Cambe, a bit further in from the sea, should not be missed.
Here rests over 20 000 German soldiers.

Cemetary is called "Friedhof" in German and means place of peace.
The austere feeling, the serenity and tranquility is indeed eminent in La Cambe.
The architecture is "low-keyed" and completely different in style and feeling from Omaha. The entrance through a small arch with the wide field opening up in front of you is almost like a choreographed movement...
Graves are marked with plaques on the ground and groups of low crosses brakes up the wast almost flat area.

American "flashy" vs. German "Valhalla" if you excuse my categorical expression.
See them both!

There is ample parking space and a small visitors center with exhibitions.

It is beautiful austere. Definitely worth a stop. Big oak trees and countless dark crosses in rows upon rows.

This cemetry, where over 20.000 german soldiers are burried, is a must see when visiting the region. Such a contrast with the bright white crosses of the allied forces, such serenity...

German War Cemetery where American GI's were buried
Okt 2016 • Pasangan
We visited this cemetery on October 18th. In front of the cemetery there is a parking lot, where you also can find an information board about the history of this German War Cemetery. Inside on the far left side there are the restrooms.
It is a well maintained cemetery and in the autumn the colors are very nice and you can see some nice flower arrangements.

If you are in Normandy and are going to visit the WW2 sites and / or are going to the US cemetery - stop here first.
This is an austere reminder of the war, without the over-the-top patriotism of the US cemetery.
You need to see them both.

Very moving site

While American cemeteries use white crosses, the German cemetery uses black stone, giving it a very somber look. Definitely worth a visit while touring Normandy.

Really Eye Opening Visit

We decided to come here after seeing the American cemetry and seeing the contrast between the two war cemetrys was increadible. It is deffinetly worth visiting here no matter how interesting you find this sort of stuff, it is deffinetly a must see. Remembering all of these people who died in such horrible ways is really important.
