Such a good idea

So, this is a museum about salt, and they're rightly very proud of that. As a non-German speaker you need to pay for audioguides that are sometimes very silly (with canned laughter, clapping etc) as everything is written in German. During covid-19 some things were naturally not possible, and perhaps some things were that shouldn't have been (multiple "touch stations"). You can learn a lot about the importance of salt.

What I did not know about the White Gold I sure learned here

What I did not know about the White Gold I sure learned here. Fascinating museum and the kids really loved how you could test and fell salt. Do stop in if you want to learn what Salt is, what the historie is for Lüneburg, and where the salt comes from on the Earth.

A fine, but a little old fashioned museum
Okt 2019 • Teman
A neat little museum providing a good and interesting overview of salt production through time. It also gives a better understanding of why Luneburg became so wealthy in the 16C. It is a little old fashioned in terms of exhibition and has limited interactive features. Main issue though is that everything is in German only. How I wish museum in Germany would internationalise their communication

Mildly interesting
Jul 2019
The guy outside showing how the salt is extracted from the liquid by heating and evaporation can speak good English (if he is the same one we spoke to) whereas inside the 'museum' showing various rooms in times gone by I found to be of little interest as it was the same as in England in the 30's - 60's.

A must if you visit Lüneburg and want to know its history.
Jul 2019
It’s a bit unusual, but definitely worth seeing while visiting Lüneburg, as the whole history of the town started with the salt. We went with the guide (was included in the price) and it’s definitely recommended, as otherwise you see all the exhibited object but don’t really know the history behind. The lady doing the tour, was very entertaining too. A big plus for all the stuff working there, they were very nice and polite (should be normal, but it’s not).

Quirky museum

At first seemingly an unusual basis for a museum but it covers a wealth of information about the mineral and the history of production here. An English guide book is available.

Absolutely recommend

Lüneburg history is linked to salt. If you want to know how and why, the visit to this museum is a must. There is an audio guide in English that explains quite well what you are looking at. With the ticket you can also go inside a house next to the museum, where you can see a typical old house. Also interesting. Ticket is around 7€

we went here to learn more about the production of salt In Luneburg. We had the opportunity to go with a German guide or do a audio guided tour with English speaking guide. We choose the last, as our German is not to good. It was very interesting to heat and see all the things in the museum. It was made very interesting. we spent a couple of hours there, and felt well intertained and a little wiser when we left. Will deffinetly recommend to visit this place.

The Salt Museum shows an enormous amount of interesting facts about salt extraction which plays a very important role in the history of Lüneburg. A visit is highly recommended.

How can you NOT go to the salt museum in Luneberg?
Jul 2018 • Teman
That's how I felt, anyway. Salt was the source of all the city's wealth. It's a quirky place and not the easiest visit if you don't read German. We arrived late in the afternoon, and they graciously let us in for free. Very nice. It was fun to troop through some of the old mine shafts. They had an folder with English comments. But we had too little time to do this place justice. I'm glad we stopped here, but more for symbolic reasons than for the visit itself. I believe they offer guided tours, which would have helped.
