Bang in the centre of Varese's gardens. We saw the exhibition of 1800 Italy and UNESCO pile-dwelling sites.

Having visited Biandronno and its Isolino Virginia site, we were anxious to come here to see its finds.
We were not disappointed. Finding the 4 Euro entrance fee waived for seniors, we were escorted to the 1st floor where we found several rooms of the 5th-7th C BC Neolithic finds(part of 2011 Unesco Pile Dwelling of the Alps); glassed cases with wall explanations in Italian. Another room showed aerial photographs of the Lake Varese digs and a model depiction of their settlement. Other rooms had extensive displays on all of this area's archaeological finds down thru Bronze, Iron and Roman times.
Before departing, we were escorted through the ballroom to the beautiful library with terrazzo floors and heavy wood beams supporting the coffered ceilings.
Outside, we strolled the manicured grounds of the surrounding park. To the south was the mansion front of Mirabella(museum is in the back), and to north, a view down to the gardens, the back of the 1777 Estense Palace, and over the city of Varese. Wonderful visit.

Beautiful small archaeological and Prehistorical museum. Unfortunately the prehistorical part does not have English texts (unlike the archaeological part). Due to that, a very kind museum worker joined us through the tour, but he himself barely spoke English (only Italian and Deutsch) - which made it not really helpful but a very kind gesture.
