The pulpit (1434-1438) is undoubtedly a masterpiece of the artistic maturity of Donatello (an artist who in this case was joined by Michelozzo for the construction of the architecture). The dynamism of the dancing children in the panels of the pulpit - in this case as in the case of the reliefs of the choir now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence - is here fully displayed; it is not a question of a "potential" movement as in previous works by Donatello (for example the David of 1416-1420), but of a movement "in progress".
In this pulpit Donatello continues his work of definitive liberation from the late Gothic stylistic features, and of affirmation of the canons of Renaissance sculpture in Italy.
The technique of making the sculptures is the so-called "stiacciato", typical of Donatello, through which the artist suggests complex perspective views despite the limited depth of the reliefs.
The merits of the pulpit do not end with the sublime art of Donatello. Michelozzo created a very elegant architectural frame, both in the balustrade, both in the canopy, and finally in the bronze capital supporting the pulpit.
Donatello's reliefs have been replaced by copies since 1970, the originals are in the nearby Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Prato.

Apparently this is one of the oldest churches in Italy dating back to the 10th century and is certainly not without interest. It's bones are clearly Romanesque with lovely black and white striped columns. And outside the later external pulpit, designed by Donatello is an unusual feature.

This duomo is stunning. It is incredibly interesting, with marvellous frescos. It’s diocesan museum is one of the best in Italy. Prato itself is easily accessible from Florence, Lucca and Pisa. It is well worth a visit, though the city itself has a neglected air.

The frescos painted by Uchello and Lippi alone make a visit to this beautiful cathedral worthwhile. Understated and elegant, a beautiful place of worship.

There are so many great things about this 12th century Romanesque cathedral, it’s difficult to know where to start. The best exterior is striking, with great use of white and black colour bands. But it’s most notable feature is the outside pulpit, on which the decorative work is by Donatello. What you see now is a 20th century copy. The original is in the Cathedral Museum next door, where it was moved to prevent any further damage from pollution. The pulpit has a remarkable wood and carved stone cover. Inside, the highlight is a series of wonderful 15th century frescoes. Another feature is the 15th century Renaissance pulpit with a series of beautifully carved phoenixes as the base. It is well worthwhile going to Prato just to see this extraordinary church and it’s museum.

The cathedral (in contract to Florence churches) is quiet with not so many visitors, marvelous atmosphere and beautiful artifacts. . It is documented as early as the 10th century located in the Borgo al Cornio, the first settlement in Prato. The current structure dates from the Romanesque period of the 12th century: the nave, side walls and greater part of the bell tower remain from this date. The upper stage of the bell tower was constructed in 1356.
In the early 15th century, a new façade or west front was added in the Gothic style, in front of the old one. In the space between the two was created corridor leading to the external pulpit built by Michelozzi and decorated by Donatello in the 15th century.
The marvelous frescoes of the transept chapel are also of the 15th century, but are in the Renaissance style. Do not miss the most notorious frescos in the main chapel by Filippo Lippi and Fra Diamanti.

Although this very old church has been altered and redecorated many times, there are still plenty of frescoes and older art. Of the things we enjoyed were a lovely Gaddi Annunciation and most of the fresco cycles around the altar. Strangely it seemed like they were going for a beheading theme because with the exception of St. Stephen, who was stoned to death, are frescoes of St. John the Baptist’s beheading, St. Margaret’s beheading, and St. James the Greater’s beheading. Curious.

The Cathedral presents a beautiful serpentine decorated exterior. Started in the 10th century it was majorly modified in the 15th century, particularly on the facade, in the late Gothic-Romanesque style, though the bell tower still dates from the 12th century. One really rare and interesting thing was the external pulpit built by Michelozzo and Donatello which was used, and still is, to show to the public the Girdle of Mary on special occasions such as Christmas, Easter etc. The interior is also decorated with serpentine, and the far end chapels contain some nice 14th and 15th century frescoes.

The Piazza Duomo is pretty small and you can walk through it pretty fast. There is a church and some other things to see but not much here. This is a small town so make sure you walk around to other area's which is what we found to be fun. The city is bigger then we thought and was a great small town feel to walk around.
