Spent a few hours here this morning
Can imagine its charm back in the day but kind of spoilt by how busy and commercial it is
We were there 2 hours tops
Way nicer spots on Amalfi coast

This place Is a rip off. There is nothing to do or see unless you wish to hike the Path of The Gods. The shops are full of junk, the restaurants are les then stellar and overpriced and we prebooked a restaurant above the town that was supposed to be great and it was messa messa and the owner was rude. A1Beaches are postage stamps . This is one of the worst destinations I have traveled too and I have been all over the world. Maybe 40 years ago the Amalfi coast was great, now it is just over touristed

We visited Positano. The town is nice, but I think overrated.
The real problem started when the weather changed. Wind speed 25km/h is enough to stop the ferries. The only alternative is the local busses. These are scheduled once an hour and, because it is the only option, are completely full. The busses don't even stop. Waiting 3 hours is normal.
It's bizarre that local automobiles don't organizing more busses. There are very emotional situations at the bus stops.
So if the weather is a little questionable: don't go (you don't miss much anyway)
Oh, and a taxi to Sorrento (45 minutes) will cost you 130-200 Euro.

Positano is a beautiful little town near Sorrento. It is a great experience for those who like unique places. The best way to get therefrom Rome is through a company that can give you the ride and the tour , also it will be the cheapest and shortest way .
If you decide to use the train, you will have to be prepared to take 3 train plus one bus, and expende more than 3 hours each way. From Rome take a train to Napoli , and from there then you will need to check with train routes could work for you.
Taxi is the third and most expensive option, but one of the fastest.
Do not believe 100% the information you can find in the internet about train/ buses connections to go to Positano. Best way is to talk with an Italian to learn before you plan your trip or going to a touristic info standpoint.

I somehow missed the memo that Positano is well past its best. It is run down, dirty, is served by a transport system that is not fit for purpose and the shops are full of utter tat. The SITA buses between Sorrento and Amalfi stop in Positano. There are not enough. People stand in queues then cannot get on. Taxis hover like wasps to sweep up the less able bodied and/or those who have lost the will to live. They name their price - daylight robbery. Avoid avoid avoid. Even the coffee is disgusting.

Positano - the town for tourists.

Positano is the most overrated place in all of Italy and Sicily. Soulless. Ridiculously crowded with tourists and expensive.

Architecturally built in a way that disinvites walking, with an ugly tiny rocky beach with hundreds of lounge chairs ($) and not even a beautiful church! Yes, a lot of buildings are painted pretty colors (that you can really only see by boat) but no way justifying the effort, cost, hassle and loss of time (one could be anyplace else). I think people come here because so many minor travel writers repeat the nonsense about it and because tourists think they have to. The phrase "bucket list" should be banned.

I would not even call Positano Italian. It is so different, so bereft of culture but so easily
missed. Just don't go there!

Every other town down along the Amalfi coast into Southern Italy is better in so many ways.

We enjoyed our short visit on a tour to Positano.

The beach is quite average and nothing like Australia.

Its a lovely charismatic town but quite expensive.

Lots of shopping, restaurants and bars around on the way down to the beach.

I love the views of all the hilltop accomodation.

Although Amalfi Coast is a long coastline overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea with no fewer than 10 towns or villages along its 40km stretch of road, promotional photos of Amalfi Coast will more often than not feature the town of Positano. And that does not come as a surprise once you've seen this picturesque vertical town with its pastel-colored houses and lush gardens of lemon and orange trees hugging precariously to the cliffside and terracing down to meet the sea. Superlative words alone aren't enough to describe Positano, you simply have to be there to believe it! Positano is famous for its kaleidoscope of colors - with the green Lattari Mountains; the white, pink and yellow Mediterranean houses; brown rugged cliffs; grey pebble beaches and blue sea - all meshing together to form nature’s perfect masterpiece. From Piazza del Mulini where the main bus station is located, stroll down the narrow cobble-stone alleys and stairways that snake their way past fashionable boutiques, houses and churches (including the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its 13th-century Byzantine icon of a black Madonna), finally reaching the main beach, Spiaggia Grande. With such instagrammable beauty everywhere you look, it's inevitable that you will be confronted with hoards of tourists and expensive prices for everything from souvenirs to food. Nevertheless, the experience of being in this spectacular town is itself priceless. You don't need the mythological Le Sirenuse (the Sirens) to seduce you with their songs to come to this town; its sublime beauty is enough to tempt you to return to this town over and over again. No wonder Nobel Prize writer, John Steinbeck mused "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone."

Even in winter the parking around Positano is very hard to find. We parked on the road above the town and walked down the 100’s of steps until finally at the beach. Clearly winter is not the best time to visit as almost nothing is open (although lots of renovations underway) but the Tourist office was helpful with a map and some recommendations. We then walked along the beach front then back up all those steps. If you find stairs challenging then find another way to get into the heart of things.

Positano is nice, the parking places close to Positano downtown are horrible, they do not have a clear price for parking.
