This 13th century palace, also known also as the Palazzo di Bonifacio VIII, is believed by some historians to have been erected by order of Pope Boniface VIII. Others think it more likely that the building was erected by the citizens of Orvieto in thanks to this pope, who had lifted a papal interdict on the city along with a hefty fine for the damage Orvieto had inflicted on Acquapendente and castles in Val di Lago.

Today the building still belongs to the Church. It is the ticket office for the Duomo and it houses the Museo d' Arte Moderna Emilio Greco and can be visited as part of the combined ticket that allows entry into the Duomo and other museums on the Piazza.

Your ticket to the Duomo will get you into this museum as well. The building itself is very interesting to see. The works are by the artist Emilio Greco would did the new bronze doors on the Duomo. There are a lot of bronze pieces to see as well as working drawings. Not a lot of signage, it would be helpful.

This museum includes the works of Emilio Greco, an artist who donated 32 sculptures and 60 graphics to the city of Orvieto. One of his works was exhibited in London during the Olympic Games of 1948, and he sculpted the bronze doors of the Duomo in 1964. Beautiful.

This museum had a collection of modern sculpture by the Sicilian El Greco. The pieces were interesting, (but repetitive in content) mostly of people who appear to be sleeping or in a daze. There was no catalogue (I asked and was told there wasn't one) and no description of the individual works. Not a must see.

Palazzo Soliano, this is parallel to the Duomo, now houses a major collection of Sicilian sculptor El Greco’s works, which he donated to Orvieto after forming a bond with the community via a commission to made new bronze doors for the Duomo. The completed doors arrived in 1964 but around this time there was a dispute whether or not the original heavy wooden doors of the Duomo should be replaced at all; and this was after El Greco had already made the new ones! Finally at dawn on 11 August 1970 the new bronze doors were hung, it is possible to see a scaled down version in the museum.
There is a plaster cast of the monument for Pope John XXIII, this is huge piece, which measures about 4m x 12ms.
Also in this small space is an El Greco collection of 32 bronze sculptures, some are larger than life and 60 works that include etchings, drawings and paintings, along with some photos. Most of the works on display are female nudes; El Greco did women beautifully, his work has movement making his sculptures seem alive. There is even a viewing walkway and spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine floor so you can take in the details from different angles.
Palazzo Soliano summer hours are 10.00am to 6.00pm.
Labels in the Palazzo Soliano are in Italian.
MODO ticket covers the chapels in the Duomo, El Greco Museum and the Duomo Museum

Palazzo Soliano was built in 1297and at present houses the Museo d' Arte Moderna Emilio Greco. The combined ticket that can be purchased to enter the duomo includes entry to Museo Greco. We probably would not have visited if the ticket had not be inclusive but on a hot August afternoon, this was a wonderfully air conditioned space that was very appreciated. Modern bronze sculptures might seem out of place in such an ancient interior, but the voluminous space provides a worthy settingfor Geco's monumental work. Greco is the artist who designed the immense bronze doors on the Orvieto Duomo.

The museum was a bit difficult to find the entrance. When we did, there was no one checking tickets. Since we had the Orvieto Carta Unica ticket, we already had a ticket.

It was an interesting museum which had some artifacts from the Duomo. But if you are running out of time sightseeing in Orvieto, this is one I suggest you skip.

During the mid to late 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century a number of poes resided in Orvieto. The upper portion of this Palazzo now houses the Museo Dell'Opera Del Duomo Di Orvieto and display a number of works from the Renaissance thru the 19th century. You can visit as part of a combo ticket that includes the Chapel of San Brizion, Museo Emilio Greco, Palazzi Papali and Chiesa Di Sant'Agnostino
