Piazza Grande is the main square in Montepulciano. It is all the way at the top of the town. Many of the attractions are located there.

nice place, but wasted by mass tourism: main way to Piazza Grande seems like a Suk, full of tourist shop who put their stupid stuff on the way itself and low quality wine shops that try to sell everything to the crowd of muzzy stranger tourists.

At first I didn't want to hike up the narrow stairs to the top of the tower, but once there, so glad I did! Amazing 360 degree of Montelpuciano!

Montepulciano is one of the most beautiful hill-top villages in Tuscany. The narrow streets that wind up towards, little shops (mostly wine 😊), cafes and restaurants along the road. On the top of the town a beautiful cathedral and piazza with stunning views of the landscape

A small vintage square, lovely to see and imagine the old ages as it was a square where people were executed. Hence, it is lovely to imagine historical events.
The square is up high and is a nice place to explore the area.
Many shops and restaurants are accessible from here. The best was Urban Bikery!
Good place to rent a bike and explore the area.

The Piazza is a great location to observe the various architectural styles of Italy's history. There are several buildings and churches to be inspected all in one square. Plus the view of the country side in any direction is remarkable.

The piazza was a good starting point for us to explore Montepulciano. Despite its name, do not expect an enormously large or grand piazza. However it is charming and is surrounded by several large palazzos.
The piazza is built on the highest point in the town. Montepulciano, like a lot of Tuscan towns, was built on the highest ground for strategic purposes. The higher the better. Having a view out across the landscape allowed them to see approaching enemies and made it much easier to defend against attack.

The piazza highlights are:
i) Palazzo Contucci – it is still owned by the same Contucci family who built it in the 16th century. Not a bad place to call home.
ii) Palazzo Communale (15th century) – this was designed to be like a miniature version of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. You can climb the tower (€5) for absolutely panoramic views although be aware that if you’re there on a Sunday, it is closed.
iii) In between the two palazzos, is the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral. It’s surprisingly austere and barn-like from the outside but that’s because the facade was never finished
iv) There is also another little treasure in the corner – an ancient well with two Etruscan columns and 2 griffins and 2 lions on the top. The lions are holding a shield and, having just come from Florence, we recognised the familiar 6 balls as being the Medici coat of arms which made us wonder why it was there. In turned out that in the 1500s, Montepulciano fell decisively under Florence’s control and that meant Medici rule. During this time Montepulciano was a loyal ally of the Medicis and Cosmo I Medici called it a "noble town"

From the piazza we headed down the main street, the Corso to the Porta Al Prato.

TRIVIA: Interestingly the piazza was the setting of many scenes in the Netflix series ‘Medici: Masters of Florence’ and also most of the filming for the New Moon Twilight Saga was done here also.
