Booked for a 1 hour tour, 20 minutes inside with a 10-15 minutes video. Walked around inside but not particular. Then outside walked around the Jewish quarter to see street signs, it was 10–15 minutes and finished.

There were only 6 on our guided tour, led by a very knowledgeable young lady. How the Jews ere treated locally was awful but we were also able to hear how some Jews had returned to this area even after the Nazi camps.

Great find -> Great value -> Great education.
We learned so much in such a short period of time. There is a lot of information packed into the space and the tour.

Whilst visiting the Basilica Do Santa Croce we found Museo Ebraico, The Jewish Museum. We took the 20 minute guided tour for 9 euro each and learnt and incredible amount of history about the Jewish people in Lecce from the 1400s to post World War 2. Claudia was an incredible and well researched guide and answered our many questions. The aretfacts, videos and AI within the mueseum take you back to a time that cannot be seen in the walls today, and very kindly, Clauda walked us around the surrounding area so that we could feel the space and build connections to what we saw in the video. A must stop when you visit Lecce!

Today I visited the Jewish Museum in Lecce, Museo Ebraico. We took the 20 minute private tour for 9 euro each and were shown around the museum and given a great history of the Jewish people in Lecce from the 1400s, to post World War 2. We also saw the mikveh and were given tips and places to visit around the city. Thank you so Claudia - this a must visit on your journey to Lecce!

Museum is extremely well done, with excellent use of technology to recreate a past which was erased. A great addition to the history tour of Lecce.

In Lecce off-season to see the many churches and enjoy the details of baroque architecture. By accident, I found a Jewish museum right in the heart of the city so I wandered in and booked a tour. I thought the price of €25 was a little on the steep side but it is comparable to other prices in the city and the tour is 60 minutes so it was justified.

The building itself is medieval and is built over and encompasses the remains of a 15th-century synagogue and ritual baths. Fortunately, I was the only one on the tour and had the complete attention of my guide, Martina, who was a Lecce local and had a genuine passion for her city’s culture and history.

The tour started with an explanation of when, how, and why Jewish people came to Lecce in the early 15th century. A short video depicted what life was like back then as they settled in and created businesses and trade to their expulsion when this area was under Spanish rule.

The next stage is personal items donated to the museum such as a tefillin, a mezuzah, and other individual pieces. My favorite part was seeing the ritual baths which are two meters deep and required a constant flow of water. Martina explained the water comes from underground springs that link with the Idume River.

Other parts of the tour included a room for making papier-mâché (something Lecce is famous for) and a focus on art. A second short video featured the return of three sisters to Lecce in 2016, they were born in Lecce in the 1940s and their families had to leave. This video was a nice touch. This room also contained old photos and stories of locals.

We then ventured out into the courtyard to see where the original synagogue stood before embarking on a short stroll to see the Jewish street names. Most notable was Via Abramo Balmes, named after a Jewish physician, born in Lecce and a personal doctor of a cardinal, (Domenico Grimani).

In the end, I was free to go back and read the information in more detail. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

One big surprise for me as an Irishman was to see my name on one of the panels. “Cathal” is an old Irish name and not very common anymore, so to see my name after the Irish Saint Cathaldus was certainly serendipitous.

Small but terrific, very moving museum (and optional walking tour) that gives you a good sense of the rich history of long-gone Jewish Lecce. Our guide, Martina, was a delight and really knew her history. Worth a visit and lending your support as the Museum seeks to expand its work and collections.

A very moving experience. A small but impactful museum made possible by the efforts of local and visiting families. A glimpse into the forgotten history of the Jews of Lecce and Salento. Well worth the visit.

The other reviewers have captured much of what makes a visit to this museum so worthwhile. We would add only two things. The museum provides some information about a little known effort by communities in the far south of Salento to provide temporary housing for Jewish refugees after World War II, who were waiting to find other homes. The generosity of the residents of Leuca, for example, was extraordinary given all that they themselves had been through. The second piece is the story of how the museum got started with the inspration and dedicatin of a few individuals. You can learn more about that story by visiting the museum.
