If you happened to be visiting Rome and wondering what else you can see near by, give Calcata a chance. It is a small town in the Province of Viterbo and is only about 40 kilometers north of Rome by car. It is charming, full of life and a very relaxing to just walk around and explore. Definitely stop by for lunch or if only passing by there are numerous tea shops that offer you a quick break before you continue on with your journey.

There is a lot to see in calcata. Firstly the houses are carved in rocks and is an entertainment to taste the awesome Italian cuisine, definetly worth a visit. However parking is scarce!

This place is magical, like entering into Harry Potter story. This amazing medioval city is north from rome, approx 1 hour driving if no traffic and its absolutely magical. My kid loves the place. Its like traspassing into past and fairytales, place where your immagination has no limits.

We visited this beautiful little hilltop town on a day trip from Rome!! The best way to reach it is by car! About an hour or so to drive. It is so peaceful and relaxing..it was very quiet and there Were not too many people around (it was lunchtime!).
We walked down the little alley ways and came upon sooo many cats!!! A cat lovers paradise for sure....!! There is a tiny shop in the town square (near the church) where the owner - an artist - gives kids an opportunity to decorate small magnets or necklaces as they wish!! At a very minimum fee of 4 euros!! Great idea for gifts to take back home!! Our child had great fun!!
Lovely for a few hours as there's not that much to see....unless you go to the waterfall just down the road and Maybe have a picnic or even just a stroll next to the cool fresh water and under the trees!
Highly recommended if you like small typical villages & cats!!

We'd originally wanted to visit Civita di Bagnoregio but just didn't have time, so we settled on Calcata. I was therefore expecting to be a little disappointed.
Instead, we were delighted by this beautiful little jewel in Lazio's crown. Around every corner is a tiny alleyway, often with a vista of the valley below. The main square provides afternoon shade and if you're lucky, like us, you'll get to hear some mellow guitar playing too, as the inhabitants are famously arty/muso types. The Rock cafe (signposted off the main square) sells welcome cold drinks and ice creams for the kids. It is steeped (no pun intended) in history and has a charming feel to it - an incredibly interesting place to spend a few hours.

The car park (cars are restricted within the village) is a bit of a hike, but there is a steep short cut which makes it about a ten minute walk. We got the Daddies to drop us at the village entrance and they then parked and walked and did the reverse on the way home.

You do need to be careful with young children, as there are some areas that could be dangerous if children aren't watched or held onto.

Overall, definitely worth a visit if you are quite local (we were staying at Lago di Bracciano).

Nice place just if you are around the area by car, spend here few hours, have lunch at a local restaurant and look the works of the local artists. The village is wonderful,, but few hours are enough

Yes the car park is a little walk from the village, but it's not as daunting as some reviewers make it seem. We visited with our children (ages 6 and 2) and they had no problem with the trek. It's worth it for the amazing views of the city as you walk down, just stunning! We visited in the middle of July on a weekday at lunchtime and not much was open, was a little disappointing once inside the village. We did manage to find a place open for gelato and the streets are lovely for a little wander. I'd recommend stopping if you are in the are already, we combined this with a stop in Sutri, about 20min drive away.

This little town is a real little gem some 50 km North of Rome. The parking is a bit far - but all in all not too bad. The town offers great views and a good number of small fine restaurants. Well worth a visit.

Definitely worth a visit if you are in Rome for 3 or more nights. It was not easy to get to Calcata from the centre of Rome because we were not familiar with the train and metro system. You have to take a metro train to Flaminio and then a train to Saxo Rubra followed by a bus (pullman) to Calcata (platform 2). It take arouns 1hr15 minutes to get there, depending on the bus and trains schedules.
